A Beginning And An End : AMD’s Athlon64 FX-60 Processor

In terms of overall processing power and bang for the buck, the Athlon64 X2 certainly was the more appealing of the two processor lines, but the Athlon64 FX family maintained a loyal following. At higher clock speeds, the Athlon64 FX processor showed solid performance advantages in applications which were single-threaded (applications which do not utilize multiple processor cores) and most notably, games. The Athlon64 FX processor's domination of high-end gaming benchmarks were hard to ignore, although the allure of buttery smooth multi-tasking with the Athlon64 X2 dual-core was impossible to deny as well. In the end, the majority of high-end AMD buyers have opted for the Athlon64 X2 family, as dual-core processing truly does help day to day system usage, and as more games are programmed to take advantage of multiple cores, the Athlon64 X2 will actually perform better than the FX in these titles.
