Aussie government brings in backdoor crypto-busting bill
 

But it says it is not really a backdoor so it is fair dinkum

The Australian government has scheduled its "not-a-backdoor" crypto-busting bill to land in parliament in the spring session.

Of course the fact is that the technology does not exist, but since when has that stopped politicians inventing laws for impossible tech?

The legislation is included in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet's schedule of proposed laws to be debated from today (13 August) all the way into December.

The law is pretty secret at the moment to avoid people asking inconvenient questions but the following from the digest of bills can be found among the spring session.

"Implement measures to address the impact of encrypted communications and devices on national security and law enforcement investigations. The bill provides a framework for agencies to work with the private sector so that law enforcement can adapt to the increasingly complex online environment. The bill requires both domestic and foreign companies supplying services to Australia to provide greater assistance to agencies."

The plan appears to be to allow the Australian government access to the networks and devices. It wants a break-in that will work on networks, if law enforcement demands it.

However that is pretty difficult without a backdoor. The Aussies are convinced it can be done without a backdoor and magically expect the industry to come up with a method that does not involve one.

Since that is pretty much impossible, it wants the industry to cover for it under the guise of "greater assistance to agencies".
