ATI Radeon HD 3870 & 3850: A Return to Competition

While the Radeon HD 3870 isn't faster than the GeForce 8800 GT, if AMD can hit its price point, it is a viable alternative if you're looking to save money.

AMD is in a lot of trouble however if the 8800 GT pricing/availability problem does get worked out; the 8800 GT does offer better performance-per-watt and better performance in general.

But the 8800 GT 512Mb doesn't cost $250, it costs €229

HD3870 has to go lower than €199 to make up for the performance drop

The Euro is pwning the dollar, that's why it is different.

but still, the 3870 has to lose a few tenners

it's not because of the $<>€, otherwise PS3 would not cost €600+ here, but €400.

You'll see same pricing for HD3870, probably €220

Yes, PNY 8800GT costs $250 because that is the cheapest price for anyone that still has stock. Link $250 is the price those cards changed to before selling out, just as they note here:

Leading up to the day the 8800 GT NDA lifted, you could actually purchase the 8800 GT for as little as $220 from a variety of online vendors. Once the embargo was lifted, the story changed considerably. Prices went from the expected $199 - $249 to a completely unexpected $250 - $300 range.
Now for the HD 3870's, they are in stock at Newegg at $220 each. Pricing will surely go down since they have just launched them.

AMD is committed to getting rid of the suffix with its GPU products, so you won't see any XT, LE, PE, FUFME, SE etc... versions of these graphics cards.
Nice :)

I rather like how they summarized the results. "3870: % of GeForce 8800 GT Performance" Which was mostly 80-95% of the 8800GT. ATI appears to have taken a bad apple (R600) and make an almost sweet apple pie with it. Anandtech's results seem to be better than Legion's, where the 2900XT was somehow outperforming the 3870.

I guess this would explain why Legion's results differed so much.

Techspot and LegionHardware 3870/8800GT reviews are frauds
