To add my drop to the ocean: a barrier is shattered everytime you cross it (like the soundbarrier is shattered everytime you reach Mach One). Except maybe when you run into a door. Then the barrier is splintered. Or your face. Depends on the quality of the door and the sharpness of yer nose... :p
