ASUS ROG OC Showdown at Dreamhack Winter 2009

ASUS will hold the world’s first overclocking competition on the 27 and 28 of November, where skill is the only factor; ASUS ROG OC Showdown. The competition takes place live in ASUS booth at Dreamhack Winter 2009, in Sweden. The true unique characteristic of this competition is that the structure of it removes the element of variables, such as different quality CPU and GPU. The aim is to create an overclocking competition format that is truly viable as a sport, rather than a product exhibition.

The world renowned 3DMark-overclockers who will battle for the ROG Champion title:

- [Belgium] Massman
- [Italy] Gorgioprimo
- [Greece] Hipro5
- [Sweden] Elmor
- [Finland] SF3D
- [Finland] Sampsa
- [Germany] Stummerwinter
- [Sweden] ME4ME

The Setups:

The systems used in the competition features the most suited hardware and software for overclocking from ASUS, Intel, Microsoft and OCZ:

- Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
- ASUS ROG Maximus III Formula
- ASUS EAH5870 (2 in CrossfireX)
- ASUS ROG Notebook for ROG Connect
- OCZ DD3 w/ Elpida Hyper, OCZ Vertex Turbo 120GB
- OCZ Z Series 1000W Gold Certified Modular
- Intel core i7 870

ASUS ROG Maximus III Series motherboards feature a revolutionary overclocking interface dubbed ROG Connect. ROG Connect enables users to link up to the embedded iROG controller via a separate PC – such as a notebook – connected via a USB cable. This allows users to tune the main system at a true hardware level in real-time, as well as view POST codes and hardware status readouts, on a notebook or netbook. Much like a race car engineer at the Formula 1 tracks.

Most interesting competition concept I've seen so far:

how will they accomplish this feat?

Will it be Win7 32 or 64b?

The Competition

Each overclocking bracket (round) in the tournament has 2 identical systems, it last for 90 min (active time). Each overclocker gets 45 min at each system. The overclocker with the highest – total 3DMark Vantage “Performance Preset” score, added from each system – score after competing on both systems wins that bracket and moves on to the next level bracket. 30 minutes will be used to reset the setups to zero-state after an overclocker has used a system. The support team on location led by famous overclocker Kinc will handle the zero-state reset. Intel Core i7 870 will be liquid nitrogen cooled. ASUS EAH5870 graphics cards in Crossfire will use the default air cooling. ASUS Voltage Tweak, Smart Doctor and ROG Connect will be the tools to adjust voltages and frequencies.

The Grand Prize

The champion will besides the title and grand trophy receive a special edition ASUS ROG G51J-3D notebook, the world first notebook with 120Hz LCD LED backlit screen and true 3D-gaming support. To power the hottest 3D-game titles, the ROG G51J features Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor at 1.6GHz (with turbo boost up to 2.8GHz) and Nvidia Geforce GTX260M with 1GB VRAM.

there is no such thing ;)

ok... so basically it will be a crapshoot of finding the highest CPU clock and GPU clock, once found, hoping that you increase it by +1 and have a lucky run to show at the end;

hmmm... interesting approach, that is for sure.

I have no how the actuall clocking will turn out. We have a day of preperation iic.

The most interesting part is the tournament structure in my humble opinion
