Just wondering; 3x120 mm fan @80cfm each = 240 cfm What if you have a heatsink the same size as the radiator with the same air flow of 240 cfm - would the C/W be the same?? ;) Oh, this will negate the noise (quiet w/c) debate IF it works the same.:) |

But the contact area remains unchanged for both apps. While water transfer heat better than air .... the "metal" direct contact whether is copper, silver or alum is better than water. Lastly, the radiator is cooled by air at the end process. However, it is the function of extraction heat; now if the processor is large enough allowing water passage to run thru the heart of the processor it would be like internal combustion engine where heat is extracted directly from the core allowing heat to be efficiently extracted to the radiator. Hence, water temp in a car radiator is much higher despite the fact that CPU core temp could reach over 700F in short period of time. |
I guess what I am trying to say is that given the current physical design ... water cooling has reached a point where further reduction in C/W is very limited. We have seen radiator size and number of fan used grow in size and number in recent three years. If a water cooled engine is limited to extract heat from the engine housing rather than from inside, VW air cooling or Porsche air cool engines would do a better job. |
Indeed water cooling has reached a point where further reduction in C/W is very limited , only direct die cooling can provide an increase of cooling capacity . Unfortunatly , until now nobody has found a way to make an easy to use direct die cooling . Especialy the sealing is a pain in the *** . *direct die cooling* The water makes direct contact with the cpu ( die or heatspreader ) |
