AMD readies big Opteron price drops

RELIABLE SOURCES tell the INQ that AMD is set to loose the bitches of pricing hell on its competitor Intel as All Hallows beckons.
The cuts will coincide with a near death experience for some of AMD’s Opteron family as its new broom wipes the old out in place of the new.

We will give you a preview of what’s going to happen but as we are in the heartland of AMD Land, we must be careful in case walls have ears.

Soon, Opteron 1XX dual core chips will only be available as socket 939 parts because AMD has zero plans to introduce dual socket 940 components. This will create both an orphan and a widow, single socket 940 motherboards will be in the grave soon enough.

And of course, there’s more. Socket 940 Opteron 1XX parts will suffer a lingering malaise over the next two quarters.

People here in Dresden tell the INQ that socket 939 and socket 940 microprocessors have totally variant pricing (TVP).

Let’s give you just an example. An Opteron 152 939 costs over $800 and a 940 pin version costs $433. Yet an Opteron 144 939 is $130 while its 940 sibling costs $50 more.

Now the Opteron 154 is out it competes with AMD’s desktop baby the FX57 and has the same cache and clock. Yet one of them costs just over one thousand greenbacks, while an FX57 costs a clear $30 more.

What gives?!?

Most of the big cuts come at the end of this month. More later.
