AMD Launches AM2 - Benchmarks Numbers from all over the web

Today AM2 is launched by AMD, in fact, it has been ready for launch for quite some time now, some shops had early sample shipment of final silicon 10 days ago already. We here at Madshrimps will try our best to keep our readers up to date with the benchmarks and articles on this new platform and share the links and snippets in this running discussion thread.

Our favorite hardcore hardware site HARDOCP has their first try with the AM2 platform and they compared it to S939 in their review, this is their personal advice on the AM2 platform, if you already have S939 DDR1:

Quote:

I personally am going to wait it out a bit with my 4800+ and 2GB of DDR-400. I will build another system this year but I am not sure whether it will be Blue or Green. I do know for sure that if I am building an AMD system here next month, I would very much embrace AMD and DDR2 and move forward with their AM2 processor inside.

TACO for Conroe

Mexican food?

The Senile Doctor 23rd May 2006 10:06

Conroe is due in two weeks or sth?

jmke 23rd May 2006 10:11

edit: you are correct, launch for June/July it seems

Rutar 23rd May 2006 11:35

total and complete ownage

jmke 23rd May 2006 11:46

AMD owns AMD?

The Senile Doctor 23rd May 2006 12:13

nuttin'interesting! I will as stated before not upgrade a cpu until the fx53 breaks or hell freezes over (and when that happens (hell freeézing over) it will run at 4 ghz anyway)
as long as there's gpu upgrades to be had, who in their right mind of gamers/internet users needs more cpupower??

duploxxx 23rd May 2006 12:31

amazing how those benchmarks difference from site to site...

the hexus comparison with conroe is so way off.... real bulshit and again a bad system setup for amd.

The conroe will beat the fx for sure, no doubt about that.
for sure in all the benchmark programs, real gaming is much less.

conroe june/july lets see when you all have one.... i bet september the earliest

AMD does have one last trick up its sleeve before the end of the year, and you will hear about it in June. It's not K8L and it's not going to affect the majority of people, but it is an interesting stop gap solution for the high end in 2006...
what could it be?

The Senile Doctor 23rd May 2006 20:32

take an educated guess, free ferrari's included with the fx-line

jmke 23rd May 2006 20:38

from the Anandtech comment box, Fikimiki adds:

Quote:

There are a couple of reasons for that:
- K8L photo had a Z-RAM implemented, so they are using this kind of cache for a quite long time.
- Shared L3 should help Athlon64 in matching Super-Pi and overall performance.
- Usage of Z-RAM will reduce cache die size by 75% with no architectural changes.

So FX-64 to beat fastest Core 2 just needs 4MB of cache...
Easy trick but can be useful to survive till 65nm production...

Basically this is what I said above for my guess of the "trick" AMD will use. Anand said it will only affect some high-end users, read FX series so it can't be price cuts as some have suggested (that would effect everyone). Adding L3 cache is the only performance improvement I can think of that doesn't require changing the microarchitecture of the cores (well at least not a big change).

However, TDP is still an issue here as someone above suggested. I don't know how much more power it takes to run L3 cache. Last time AMD did it was on K6 and power wasn't really measured back then.
so they might end up giving the A64 the same cache boost that Intel gave Yonah?

Intel is definitely hoping for a July launch for Conroe.
