AMD forces Intel to drop chip prices by 50%

The company told customers it will cut prices of its high- end Core 2 Quad processor by 50 percent on July 22, according to an Intel document given to clients. The chips, introduced in November to run servers and the most expensive personal computers, sell for $530 each, according to Santa Clara, California-based Intel's Web site.

Darn, Intel stock is picking up today .... so does AMD, go figure.

I can only applaud the availability of a desktop Quad Core CPU for <$400 :)

Kougar 12th June 2007 21:41

This was forecasted back in December... but almost no one remembered it nor later in the spring... still big news to some today even.

I don't think it is AMD dictating processor prices as much as Intel is doing the dictating, however. :-p

Do you think ATI can 'force nVidia' to cut the price of an 8800 Ultra to say, $400?

Kougar 13th June 2007 03:21

Heck no, they'd need to offer a better performing part first or drop the prices on their Crossfire setups a fair bit further.

Arctucas 13th June 2007 15:40

@Kougar,

It was a bit of sarcasm, we all know DAMMIT can't compete with nVidia or Intel at this point.
