AMD Already Sampling Fusion Chips

AMD’s chips based on Fusion architecture have reportedly been sampling to select customers, and the chips are expected to enter into mass production at the end of this year. Fusion includes a design codenamed “Llano” for mainstream laptops and desktop PCs, which will combine a CPU and GPU in the same piece of silicon. This is different from Intel’s Clarkdale CPUs which have an integrated graphics processor in the same CPU package, but in a separate piece of silicon.

AMD is also delivering a chip codenamed “Ontario” based on the Bobcat core, which will feature an integrated GPU, but will be targeted at the low-power and ultra portable laptop market.According to AMD CEO Dirk Meyer, AMD is “quite happy” with the testing of the samples so far. AMD also notes that we’ll see the launch of a top-end desktop CPU codenamed “Zambezi” based on the Bulldozer architecture which features up to eight cores.
