Abit & Asus CPU Temps: Fact or Fiction?
 

As every overclocker knows, and as is very well documented on the Net, the two favorite manufacturers for the typical enthusiast have a huge discrepancy when reporting CPU temps. Depending on a tweaker’s preference you might hear “Abit read high, Asus is correct”, or exactly the opposite. Here at the BE labs we decided to get to the bottom of this controversy and investigate who’s right, if anyone.

Compared to my Aerogate II, my NF7-s v2 reads 5°c to high, when I reboot, the readings are the same. And sometimes, the temps a f*cked up, to low readings and not changing when my Aerogate changes.

Not only the big two show different temps at a wide margin; even within Asus or Abit, two IC7 may not have the same temp reporting.

Here is my theory as to why this easily fix error left untouched.

1) IC7 with high temp reporting would sell W/C. (Abit is into partner ship with other hardwares in the U.S.)
2) Asus P4C800 or P4P800 will sell more boards; low bragging right.

About time we are exposing this more. I wrote an article in 2002 on the same subject. By the way, MSI boards show not much difference .... on the high side most of the time.

The wide margin of inaccuracy could be found with P4; less with AXP due to the use of thermister.

9 months ago I measured with whitewaterblock -1048 eheim pump- dual 120mm rad black ice xtreme
asus p4c800 : stressed and overclocked p4 (I think at 3.5 or 3.6 ghz) : 33-34°C
with abit ic7max 3 same setup : 45-46°C

crappy stuff huh.

I've written several emails to both Abit and Asus; nothing.

A $5 thermometer from a local hardware store is more accurate than a full blown "computer". As I said before "they" got us by the balls.

Bottom line; economic pay out.

Use external probe as close to IHS as possible; add ~5 -6C would be pretty close to Intel tCase spec rather than drilling a hole in the heatsink.

All motherboard reviews should include temp accuracy; what if a mother reports 3.5 Ghz CPU speed and it turns out only 3 Ghz??

Same here with my asus p4c800e deluxe, under load, it tends to read (at least) 8°C less then the value in the bios.
