how do i know my sata on my mobo?

i have sata ports on my mobo but i look at computer store there is sata 3.0 what is this?

the first sata was 1.5Gb/s, the latest SATA is 3Gb/s or Sata II.

Most of the Sata II hdd's are backwards compatible

i think my sata is 1.5Gb will it suit my sata HDD 3.0?
