Reboot Ahoy : 340watt not enough?

I'm having the strangest experience ,
a couple weeks back I changed the mobo & cpu of my Multimedia PC

currently it houses

ASUS P4PE
P4 2.26Ghz
256Mb DDR
R8500 AIW DV
SB Audigy
PCI SCSI card

2x 7200rpm HD's (ata66&ata100)
1x 16speed DVD
1x disk drive

I can boot the machine just fine a make all the adjustments I want in my BIOS.

But whenever I try to boot into Windows , it starts cold booting @ random

Using these numbers & the 56Watt specs for a P4 2.26

I end up with ~251Watt used.

the PSU is a Chieftec 340Watt, but It "seems" it can't cope with the power requirements of the P4 :(

ps: 2.8+Ghz folding station of course down 24/24 :/
I hope that the problem will be fixed saturday when I will buy biCker's 450Watt PSU

TeuS 28th November 2002 19:38

strange...

you've tried em on another computer?

jmke 28th November 2002 20:05

"em" ?

what "em"? :-)

anywayz
very strange things
It might be the CPU who is screwed up :-/

I removed the SB, SCSI, the DVD and 1 HD.
started back up, same things keeps happening

but now!
I up the vcore of the cpu to 1.77v
and it is stable.
folding away at 100% usage
CPU temp @ 56°C
and running @ 150x17

anything below that voltage = random reboots at no matter what speed (also at default 2.26)

:(

CPU ran at 2.760Ghz for some time now @ 1.70v vcore.. never went above that

now it doesn't work at the same voltage/speed

ARGHL

TeuS 28th November 2002 20:32

u've tried the PSU on an other computer?
5v rail ok?

otherwise-->cpu fvx0red

Bosw8er 28th November 2002 20:47

The easiest thing to do (10 min work) would be to put another PSU in it and see what happens.

I'm sure you have a 250W Aopen lying around ....

jmke 28th November 2002 21:02

CPU not even stable @ 2.25ghz now

not even when pushing 1.85v :(

argh

TeuS 28th November 2002 21:16

the general replaces em for only 15€ :o

he's also supplying me ram,
512mb DDR pc 2100 cl2.5 Twinmoss for only 135€ :o

(borrowed some cash from my 'bro until the beginning of next month ;))

huh? what ? where how ?

TeuS 29th November 2002 07:56

el general = in close contact with intel :grr:

with his function, he can E.G. replace a dead cpu with a new one, as long as it isn't broken in two, totally scorched or so

don't ask me how he does this!

contact him @ the SG forum
it's even possible that he gives you a replacement cpu while he's getting a new one!

I guess the psu is to blame here.

I have the same mobo but with a P4 2.53, 512 DDR, gf4 ti4200, 7200 rpm hd, dvdrom + writer (+sb live!, but i doubt this requires a lot of power ;) )
My psu is an enermax 350W, which should be enough. For some unknown reason, my 12V line does never reach 12V tho, it's more like 11.4-11.6V when under full load... Other V lines are quite right tho.

My guess it's either the psu that can't cope or the mobo that returns faulty stats readings.
In a review ( http://www.3dxtreme.org/Soltek_sl-85DR3p1.shtml ) they claim the asus P4PE returns a CPU temperature that is 9 to 10 degrees over the real value (compared with other mobo's), maybe the V lines are not correct either ?

To test this (and because a needed a stronger PSU for my server anyway), I bought a antec true power 480W PSU, which I'll go and get shortly. I'll replace the enermax with it and replace the server psu (a mere 250W) with the enermax.
I'll keep you posted ;)

jmke 30th November 2002 00:30

changed the PSU
under load the 12v line is around 11.85v

P4 2.26@1.5v remained stable for... hmm let's say... 5min?

damnit, I'm afraid it IS the CPU that is causing all the troubles :(

biCker 30th November 2002 00:44

just checked my antec 550w, 2.26@ default: 12v = 11.80V on mbm with almost no 12v consuming devices attached and no probs...

jmke 30th November 2002 00:54

I don't think it is the PSU :(

damn, P4 "naar de zak"

WARNING !

do not thrust The General, I know/knew him personally (he used to work in the same firm as me) and I'm not lying when I tell you that more than half the stuff he sells is "found" if you know what I mean

(and he is no networkengineer or whatever, he's what we call in flemish, een "leercontracter", earns only €350/month and "his" MG, is his mother's)

just bought 512 Mb DDR from him at a good price,
he sold some of 128mb and 256 I think, but ordered a stick of 512mb for me. stealing on command?
ffs, i gave my word saturday (read: i would buy it when i got the cash) and tuesday he already started stresstesting it
a trainee? I don't really believe that

or it's just a guy that pretends more then he really is? a gay who wants to be 'de stoeren' ?
strange...

mot: i knew that teh way of getting me the memory so cheap wasn't really legal... but messing with the state (this is belgium after all) != stealing from his colleagues!

ModdiN MansoN 30th November 2002 18:34

I know it sounds a bit "overdreven" what I say, but it is all true, believe it or not, I was his best friend for about a year, the guy lives in an imaginary world, wich even he believes to be real sometimes. his life is filled with lies, never, in my whole life, have I met anyone else like him, his constant lying is the main reason why I have cut all contact with him (luckily he no longer works with us anymore).
I am 100% sure that he has some kind of mental problem and needs professional help.

this was my last post in this thread, for further info, pm or mail me

ps. sorry to have messed up your thread jmke :bloos:

i could have thought
back ontopic now

ps: http://www.majstro.com/Web/Majstro/d...p?gebrTaal=dut ;)

Zinzin 30th November 2002 21:01

i installed the antec psu. The only difference with the enermax is, it's even more quiet now...
Apperently the enermax coped well enough with the P4 and co.
I'm thinking now even more the readings of the mobo are mistaken, or else it's got a serious power problem !

Off-topic: I can't say I have great thoughts of the general, but meeting him in person, he made a good & reliable impression on me. That was only once & for a short period...
Someone else on this forum however, blew it quite nicely for me. But that would be taking this even more off-topic. I can only advise everyone to ask for the €'s needed (and the full amount) when selling something.

jmke 1st December 2002 00:29

I checked with Comtech, they will take the P4 after I have a RMA number from Intel :)

26-13= 13 days

not too shabby!

Interested in buying?

jmke 27th December 2002 16:13

seems nobody wants it
[M]Folder7 coming up

biCker 27th December 2002 19:43

when my rma mobo arrives, I'm your man, but it won't (should already have been here, can't risk buying the proc though without a mobo to fit the cpu on) :(
