Quirck of the day: MSI Wind + Windows 7 RC 7100 = no mouse pointer

Installed SSD in MSI Wind U100, boot from USB (winsetupfromusb + Win7 RC 7100 32bit setup); installed the system: all fine. Auto detect hardware and update in Windows installed latest chipset drivers; reboot the system... no more mouse pointer. The mouse is still working, you can see it having an effect on the menu's etc, you just can't see the pointer.. not very handy to work with I tell you :)

Updating to Windows 7 RTM now, fingers crossed that it will bring back the pointer.

Regarding SSD in a netbook: like placing a Ferrari engine in a go-kart, yes the kart goes faster than with the normal engine, but the difference is far from stellar, the CPU is holding back the real performance gains.

Regarding Windows Vista/7 on MSI Wind U100 (and other Atom 1.6ghz/Intel GPU netbooks): disable Aero if you want the system to be responsive, the Intel GPU doesn't do a good job with Aero, while the effects are there, they take a nice chunk of your CPU performance, and since the CPU is already underpowered, you're hitting 100% usage often. Without Aero enabled, the experience is improved noticeably.

If I remember correctly, Windows 7 Starter (the edition for netbooks) won't have Aero so performance should be okay then :) .
How does it compare to Windows XP on a netbook ? Much slower or still acceptable ?

pretty good actually, I ran Windows 7 earlier this year on a DOT from Packard Bell

testing a newer DOT /MA now (with Athlon CPU and AMD GPU) and it really is even more snappier in Win7; works nicely

I'm using a Patriot WARP 32gb SSD, a previous generation one, with very low 4k performance, when doing multiple tasks at once, this issue rears its ugly head

Is Aero usefull on the new DOT ? Or is the AMD GPU as bad as the Intel one ?

AMD X1200 series GPU is quite capable; runs Aero without breaking a sweat, can run Quake 3 at 80fps (1024x768) as well as UT2003 and other games. The CPU, from initial tests, also seems to be more powerful, Athlon 1.2Ghz beating Atom 1.6ghz :)
