Which one ?

Buying my gf a new pc for around 1000€

My eyes dropped on ... :

- Sapphire 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro RTL 299.72€
- 256MB DDRRAM TwinMos Twister PC400 2x57.41€
- 80GB IDE Maxtor 6Y080M0 S-ATA 2x73.40€
- Asus K8V Deluxe VIA K8T800 Socket754 133.81€
- AMD Athlon64 3000+ Boxed 239.25€

= 934.38€

or

- Sapphire 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro RTL 299.72€
- 256MB DDRRAM TwinMos Twister PC400 2x57.41€
- 80GB IDE Maxtor 6Y080M0 S-ATA 2x73.40€
- Asus P4P800 Deluxe i865PE Socket478 125.69€
- Intel P4 NW 2,6GHz 800MHz Boxed 512KB 171.28€

= 858,31

(overclocking the last one till 3,..GHZ)

Rest of the money goes 2 the case and maybe new mouse.
btw : is that good ram ?
Prices are from this site

Pc is for regular people with no overclocking skills :p
Give me some advice or ideas.

1st choice,
A64 will blow the P4 setup out of the water performance-wise

FreeStyler 8th January 2004 19:40

well since socket 754 will be obsolete pretty soon, I can't really reccomend that. Sure it's faster for now, and unless you don't want any upgradability (or willing to shell out everything for a whole new setup) You're probably better off with the P4.
Or even better safe some money and do a 2500+ Barton. They seem to hit 200fsb pretty easy these days.

BTW there's a good read on the A64 situation on overclockers.com

the best buy moneywise is indeed a Socket A solution,
the best performance buy is the A64

the current crop of P4 motherboard (some at least) will be obsolete also when the next revision of the Prescott hits the market is 6-9 months

either way, all current platforms will be updated to reflect an upcoming CPU change.

Socket A -> Socket 754 -> Socket 949
Socket 478 -> Socket 478 + support for Prescott -> Socket XXX (don't remember the number :p but Intel is planning on a more "pinned" edition of their prescott CPU or the next one following the prescott)

187(V)URD@ 8th January 2004 22:10

see where i am going :D:super:

P4 might be the most upgradable path after all, at this time

Quote:

Intel is moving from the current Northwood P4 and introducing Prescott P4. This is the processor changing size and cache - nothing more. The chipset is NOT changing; the only image impact expected is a ROM flash that is backwards compatible. Status of current Northwood P4 and Celeron configurations:

P4 2.6GHz SKUs will extend through July 2004

All other Northwood SKUs will EOL June 2004 (SKUs currently in channel / on lifecycle chart)

Celeron will continue to be Northwood processors - not moving to Prescott technology until later in Prescott cycle

Intel launches Prescott on February 2, 2004

Prescott will continue to be a P4 Processor

The change to the processor from the current Northwood P4 is the size (shrinking to .09 from .13) and the L2 cache increasing to 1MB from the current 512KB

The system board is NOT changing

Images will NOT be affected, ROM flash is required and is backwards compatible

Differentiating between Northwood P4 and Prescott P4

E = Prescott

Example:

2.8GHz = Northwood P4 2.8GHz (current product)

2.8E GHz = Prescott P4 2.8GHz

2.8E GHz HT = Prescott P4 2.8GHz HyperThread

Speeds will be from 2.8 - 3.4GHz, HT (2.8E GHz 533 FSB is the only non-HT in the Prescott line-up)

At launch the 2.8E GHz (non HT) will be at price parity with the current 2.6 GHz, HOWEVER, availability for mass transition will not be until late April or early May.

Dus moet ik voor P4 gaan ?

jmke 8th January 2004 22:57

if you want to upgrade that PC in the coming year with a faster processor then yes P4.

but if you want this PC to be remain "untouched" for 2-4 years go for the A64, as you will need to upgrade your motherboard & videocard anyway :)
