New setup

i need some advice, i'm planning to buy a new computer. I'm planning for using it in my home network, as a email server, webserver and all that ****

Ofcourse i will hook it up with 526Ram and 160Gb HD.

But which is the best processor/mobo to run such a server.

So should i take a p4 or a barton or something else to run 24/7

Most bang for the buck: nForce2/Athlon XP Tbred B CPU
Most Power for the buck: nForce3/Athlon 64

in case everything is left running at default

in my humble opinion

and if you want some overclocking

p4, on stock speeds it's not super fast, but almost every 2.6/2.6 C makes it to more then 3.2 GHz. And then it's fast :)

If you will really only use it for email/file/webserver, you don't need a fast computer, but a good NIC and storage system.

A cheap, linux compatible amd mobo with a xp2000+ should be more than enough. Tip: sis linux support is unexisting, nvidia support is mediocre and via support is good.

Webserver: is he gonna serve dynamic (php?) pages with DB backend?

I think a simple VIAbased motherboard with a XP2000/D1600 will serve all your needs.. And I would go RAID1 (mirror)..

(I'm using a P2 350, 512MB RAM, RAID1 40GB array, and it serves all my needs..)
