personally (and let me stress this: p e r s o n a l l y :^D ), I'd go for the clawhammer versions (1mb l2 cache)

be mindfull though, as there are some things to keep in... mind :D

the clawhammers at newegg are all DTR (dekstop replacement) or mobile versions, so you may need a bios update for that DFI to get those to be recognized and/or to get them to work at all.

clawhammers are clocked 200mhz lower then the newcastles and that's also about the performance difference they'll generally give you... except for games (don't know about heavy graphical applications for sure but the same should apply as for games), you benefit more from the 1mb l2cache from the clawhammer then the 200mhz higher clock from the newcastle.
and should you later on choose to overclock still then the performance gap between the clawhammer and the newcastle will only become bigger --> you'll need more then 200mhz to make up for the lesser cache on your newcastle.

IMO, go 939 and don't consider 754 right now if you are buying new setup. If you had 754 I'd say stay put for a bit, but if you are buying new, there is not a significant price diference. We are talking maybe $50-60 and the performance advantages warranty that price IMO.

I'd go with PDP TCCD based memory which is just over $200 for a 2x512mb kit. Get an MSI K8N Neo2 NF3 ultra and your set for good oc'ing and high performance.

Right now Im looking MSI K8N Neo2 and Athlon 64 3200 90 nm. Im just wondering, is the 3400 90nm because Theres not much price differencein the refurbs section. Now, my biggest question. What kind of heatsink fan can I put on a socket 939. So, the thermaltake would work. That xp 90 is to much $ for me lol. What is it one of those with no fan? Will pretty much any 754 hs fan fit a 939. I mean, is athlon 64 athlon 64? The sockets look the same...Thanks

the mounting for socket 754 is the same as for socket 939 so in theory, they will all fit.

in reallity, the bigger coolers may not fit because of the way the board is designed. If it doesn't' fit, it's usually because of capacitors or the northbridge heatsink. sometimes you also loose a memory slot.

I know zalman has a list of incompatible boards and thermalright has a list of compatible boards for their coolers, I don't' know about other manufacturers...

Ive been looking at the gigabyte mobo that kristos put up earlier in the thread. I found a review at anandtech for socket 939 mobos. It has a higher priced GB mobo (k8nsxp I think) that runs about even with the msi neo2. But obiousely i dont want that one because its like 200 bucks. I want to know if the cheaper one kristos put up is just as fast as that one. I read somewhere it was the same board as the xp version without dps or something. Is this true? Is the one kristos put up just as fast as the msi? thanks

anyways, at first glance, there is preciously little difference between the 115$ board and the -200$ board.

I suppose the 200$ board will have dual bios, dual power, and more of those fancy things.

the 115$ board is still very feature rich and (in my humble opinion) has everything you'll ever need on board.

It'll also perform the same as it's more expensive brother.

I think dps is some power saving device that comes with some gigabyte mobos. I THNK LOL. What is dual power and dual bios. from what you said it sounds like id never need it. Does the msi have it? thanks
