How's this setup sound?

I am going to do a computer overhaul soon, my current compy is way behind in the realm of gaming...
I am only going to upgrade the graphics card, proccessor and mother board, this is what they'll be:

Video Card
Gigabyte 6600GT (PCI Express)

Proccessor
AMD Athlon 64 3200+

Mother Board
Abit Fatal1ty AN8

Will this handle the latest games while maintaing a good frame rate? Opinions wanted.

jmke 8th June 2005 22:08

it will handle games at medium resolution with good detail or higher resolution at medium detail.

the CPU is powerful enough, mobo is okay also, it might be more interesting to opt for 6800 series of nVidia or X800XL

RichBa5tard 8th June 2005 22:20

I agree with jmke. Save a little on your motherboard and get a X800 or 6800.

$$

Not enough money.
I am trying to make this on a tight budget. I am not even sure if I am getting that mobo, maybe getting a little cheaper of one. I want to spend as little as possible, the only "upgrade" I am getting (that I am spending more than I could on) is opting for PCI Express instead of AGP, just because the longterm value of PCI express.

The amount of system ram might matter.

How much you have now?

Rapishorrid 8th June 2005 22:32

Not a lot!

I only have 320mb.....I know it's sad..
I'll definitely have to upgrade that.

I would recommend 2x1GB of cheap brand ram for some futureproofness.

Let's be honest, 2GB of memory is a whole lot of memory. We are talking 2048 megabytes, 2,097,152 kilobytes , or a lot of bytes... This kit is not for the faint of heart. You need to be a hardcore video editor, photo editor, running a fairly high powered server, or a major gamer to need this much ram.

i think that 2 GB isn't a bad idea for a new system (i'm getting me 2GB too today), it's futureproof as we all know that in a year or 2 2GB will probably be the recommended or even worse, the minimum. So if you buy 1Gb dual channel now, you might have to toss that out to get 2Gb (if you don't want to lower to a 2T command rate on an A64)
