How do you backup your important data? I'm currently using a dedicated file server with 2 disks in RAID-1, and each month I write the important documents to a DVD+R so I can go back in time and restore different version of files. also have a few batch script which copy /my documents folder from the RAID-1 array to a 3rd data hard drive (4x a day) What's your approach on storing data you don't want to lose. |
- all data stored on raid 1 on server (email / mydocs / outlook / addressbook / Favorites / ...) - scheduled daily backup of data to spare pc in other room - once a month : copy data to CD (storage at home) - once every two-three months : install updates + cleanup + defrag + make image of server and burn it on CD Possible disaster scenarios : - OS crash : restore last image - server crashes : spare pc will do the server's job ... downtime ± 10 min. Only loss of data for that day only - power outtage : UPS makes server run for about 20 mins, making a backup before it shuts down - software crashes raid 1 + currupts all data + currupts 2 disks (imagen !) => replace disks (i have 2 formatted/partioned spares), restore data. Only loss of data for that day only |
-Old computer with copy of data (haven't used that for more than a year  -copy data on CD-rw's |
forget to add: also have a few batch script which copy /my documents folder from the RAID-1 array to a 3rd data hard drive xcopy from an entire folder to another drive, only copying those files which have changed/were added. Very quick and easy; runs 4x a day and has saved some work already, this way I have immediate access to 2 versions of every document :) |
You're all  if you ask me. I just have Ghost images of my OS and installed programmes on another HD. Should backup my data to DVD's too this summer. |

Wouldn't it be a great idea to make a tutorial on this matter? ;) Because I've got a laptop and a normal computer here, the computer is used for gaming, but also for data storage/backup. But I'd really like to know how I can make sure that for example all the data from the 'My Documents'-folder on my laptop is backed up to the Computer every day, including a backup of my emails and favorites from my browser (if at all possible). Because yes, I go crazy everytime my laptop goes haywire and I lose some data that I 'forgot' to back up. (I do back up every few weeks, but accidents usually strike the day before you planned to back it up if you know what I mean...) |
I use 2*80 GB in Raid 1 for 'My Documents' and use "Genie Backup Maker" to copy important data every night to this raid. It's a great tool btw; some features:
And it can automatically backup your e-mails, fonts... Nice tool! |
