Which harddisk to choose?

I'm considering buying a new Harddisk since my current one is silently dying (old maxtor 40gb).

Which of these 3 brands can you recommend?

jmke 4th October 2004 11:38

WD
but check warranty, the more the merier

kr15t0f 4th October 2004 13:08

WD

TerAngreal 4th October 2004 15:13

Western Digital, definately

Ordered me a nice WD 120gb with 8meg cache.
/me is happy

Sidney 4th October 2004 18:34

Price/service/rma - and return warranty turn around time: WD beats them all.

The worst IBM or now Hitachi Global.

FreeStyler 4th October 2004 21:13

Seagate is the one for me.

WD has this very high pitched noise that drives me nuts. But it's above the hearing range for most people (sucks for me).

Maxtor is close second best, if price is a higher concern.

Seagate is quiet, reliable, just not as fast as the rest. But it comes close enough.

yeehaa!! 4th October 2004 21:35

Western Digital for me
(bad experiences with Maxtor)

IBM is still the best performer though..
Ánd currently very well priced...

They had some problems with their deathstars (mine is now broken for the 3rd or 4yh time, I think it's time they give me a new model ffs

FreeStyler 6th October 2004 10:01

IBM is out, hitashi is in.
They do seem to do pretty well.
but the reputation is something else.

They'll always be IBM to me ;)

Reputation is on a low indeed, but competitive pricing & good performance will bring that back sometime...

(and then they'll the most expensive again prolly :))

jmke 6th October 2004 10:39

Added IBM/Hitachi to poll;)

Sidney 6th October 2004 15:13

I still have one IBM/Hitachi SATA80; crossed my fingers.;)

BlackRabbit 6th October 2004 15:36

What about Maxtor reliablity?

I've always been happy with Maxtor, but I heard that recentky they have alot of problems?

Anyone more info about this?

does anyone have experience with DimondMax10 200Gb drives?

What are the current warranty-times (in years) given on all harddisks?

jmke 6th October 2004 15:37

I have 2x120gb Maxtor which are showing errors 1.5 year after purchage, warranty is only 1 year.. :(

24/7 usage?

(edited my previous post btw)

jmke 6th October 2004 15:41

17/7 usage.

RichBa5tard 6th October 2004 17:11

Seagate or samsung. Both have 5 year warranty and are pretty silent.

kr15t0f 6th October 2004 17:38

I got 3 very old hdd's. 2 of WD and 1 of maxtor. Maxtor is broken, both the WD's are still working perfect. The wd's are even a few years older than the maxtor. But I also got a maxtor of 40GB that workes perfect, even after it falled out my hands etc.

Don't need silent disk, I need speedy disks :)

What if accoustic management is off (seagate)?
Is it still noticibly slower than the other disks?

5 year on all Seagate disks?

FreeStyler 6th October 2004 23:31

it's still slower.

noticably is a different story.

Bot if noise is no concern, maxtor will probably be the best choice.
Price is good, they are speedy and they are big.

If price and size is no concern, you shouldn't be asking here, you should get a pair of 74GB raptors.

Unless you've got a controller that supports NCQ :)

Too bad Maxtor only gives 1year warranty...

BlackRabbit 7th October 2004 08:06

1st of september...

Does that mean all disks have 3years warranty by now?

A-star 7th October 2004 09:17

No it's not.

Check storagereview , they've got extensive tests between all models. The Baracuda V series is slower, but the 7200.7 series is on par with the fastest WD desktop drives. Sometimes they're a little bit slower, sometimes a bit faster.

BlackRabbit 7th October 2004 14:21

I need a disk that can give enough data while 1-5 files are being read at the same time (busy ftp).

That's the problem in most tests: not always random reads are included :/

Check out the multi-user fileserver benchmark, the Seagate 7200.7 is the fastest 200GB disk for your use (only the hitachi 250GB seems to be faster).
