gfx-card, what to choose ?

I'm planning to buy me a new gfx-card (4600 is starting to get slow), but I'm having some trouble deciding:

* ati 9800xt
* NV FX5950U
* or wait for a next-gen?

with pci-express around the corner, I think this will be my last agp-card, so I want it to be one I can play doom3/hl2/... on in high detail.

What would you guys do ?

I'd wait nextgen, ati is just boosting their current chipset. there are already so many cards I even don't think about buying an ATI card ;)

I won't go Nvidia myself anymore, I've heard ATI offers better image quality (and don't cheat with drivers).

just wait.
new generation will be splendid.

it will take a while before next gen cards will actually be available for a reasonable price.

i'd buy a r9700 / 9800, or maybe a fx5900 xt if you can find it real cheap.

any info on when the new cards will come out ?

next generation of cards will be shown to the public at cebit and availability should be april...
your ti4600 can go along for some more time (preferrably overclocked)... you should wait... you won't get much for that ti4600, use it up...
you have to know there are not a lot of big gamereleases before 4/04 (no doom, no halflife, no farcry, no stalker...) and if you buy now, you'll be sorry to see all those pciexpress nextgen card vrashing down on your threemonthold 9800 xt...

if you still want to buy, consider a 9800 non pro, which you can overclock easily to 9800 xt levels... to bridge the next nine months...

I don't think PCI Express will make a big difference compared to AGP 4x/8x. in my humble opinion

ModdiN MansoN 22nd January 2004 14:26

I think I'll just wait some more until the first big game comes out in a couple of months and see what's on the market then.

thanks for the advice guys

The Senile Doctor 22nd January 2004 14:36

don't forget your ti4600 (overclock it!) is faster then fx5700/radeon9600.

jmke 22nd January 2004 14:38

hmm I doubt strongly about that statement mr. C. The FX5700/R9600 have much better DX9 support.
