Digital satellite receivers
 

Since analog tv signals are soon going to disappear here in Belgium, my father upgraded to digital tv via satellite. For Belgium we have the "TV vlaanderen" package which makes the most popular Flanders channels available on the satellite receiver. For around 9€/month you get digital television which is cheaper then other digital solutions via cable (Telenet) or ADSL (Belgacom), the only downside is the high installation cost.

Now, 1 year later, I feel a bit betrayed. I still like the satellite solution, but our receiver is not functioning like what we'd expected it to be. It occasionally fails and goes into reboot loops, nothing you can do about it, it is a pain in the *** when watching movie's or documentaries. Now suddenly it seems that our receiver is not compatible with our DVB-S TV Vlaanderen solution.

We have the eMetabox 3 receiver here, in my search for a solution to fix this issue I found that we could do lot's of cool things via satellite, hacking channels is one of those. Unfortunately I've only found people talking about such things, no real English tutorials so far, maybe because it requires firmware upgrades... I hope to succeed, but anyway, what I really wanted to ask for, has any of our readers experience with DVB-S(atellite)?

DVB sucks in certain locations; we prefer digital cable here. :)

Issue may have been solved, atleast it has not struck us again since we recently decided to put the internal electronics in open air. One of the voltage regulatators felt very warm, we were not able to hold the heatsink for 10s. Thank God I've got lots of practice in sinking my electronics :D

I would not have a clue how it works over there, but US-side if the cable box dies or is no longer compatible the cable service provider replaces it at no charge. Same for our cable modem, we've already had one wear out inside 2 years.
