Choosing new hardware.

Hey guys,

I'm going to buy a new cpu, mobo, memory and cpu cooler(air).
I have around 550€ for these components. I had the new dual-core intel wolfdales in my mind, and a scythe mugen. For the others components i really don't know what to pick. But i want to oc this rig to 4ghz+ with air and without pushing the voltage to much. What motherboard and memory modules(2GB) should you guys advise me? I think the scythe mugen as cooler is a good choise? Also i'm not sure which cpu to pick : the 8500 or the 8400?(is the moreprice for the 8500 worth the higher MP?).

greetings

mystic

I made a list with these components : do you guys think everything is ok?
-motherboard: Abit IP35 S775
-cpu: intel 8400
-memory: Transcend aXeRam Kit 2GB PC9600 DDR2- 1200mhz 5-5-5-15
-cpu cooler : Noctua NH-U12P + MX-2

Intel P35 motherboard: good
CPU 8xxx series: good
CPU cooler: most likely good, have not tested it yet, but its massive size will keep the CPU cool and quiet

memory is rated high enough, PC2-8000 will be good enough too though, check prices (even PC2-6400 will suffice)

as always, Overclocking is never guaranteed, sample variance etc

Ok i also saw cheaper memory : crucial ballistix pc6400 4-4-4-12. they seem to oc very nice. And if you say 6400 is good, maybe i'll try the 8500?
my goal is to reach around 4ghz without pushing the voltage alot.

btw price for the memory is 117€. you think it's not worth the price/performance? and go for lower?

I would take ballistix pc5300, (same chip as pc6400) I think that, that is the best memory for OC (2.2v 1000mhz cl4, 2.5v 1200mhz cl5). MOBO Abit IP35-E, non pro, is enough, cpu E8500 or E8400 and cooler TR 120 eXtreme and powerful fan

I though he has all ready received his parts, care to share some performance numbers with us Mystic?

For 4Ghz on air you will be pushing the voltage to near maximum for air cooling.

Go with the crucial 6400, you only need 445x9 to hit 4GHz and a good set of 6400 can hit 500FSB easy.

ThermalRight 120 Extreme is the top end Air Cooler, bit hard not to recommend the best:ws:
