AMD S939 Dead?

My local PC shop owner has heard rumours that production of S939 has ceased (or will very shortly). Anyone heard anything?

jmke 20th June 2006 10:53

if would be a logical step for them to cut down on S939 as AM2 is their new platform and they need to ship in quantity; the Athlon XP has already gone the way of the dodo and the current S754/S939 is not far behind I think

FireTech 20th June 2006 11:09

I know, I'm just shocked it would be so quick. Some MB makers have only just released new S939 boards!

BTW Looking forward to the HR-05 test

I'm turning that HR-05 test into a chipset roundup:)

on-topic, I fired off an email to AMD, hope they get back to me.

Theo from TheInquirer let me know that S754 will most likely outlive S939...

Weird about S754 surviving.
I suppose the S939 situation is logical in a way. If you invest hugely and then launch a new product that doesn't really provide a major performance improvement over your existing chips what can you do.
Remove that old alternative and focus on the new product. (Like they appear to have done with the 1MB cache chips too)
Cheers

Ah, you found the DT article :)

I agree it's somewhat ironic... many sites (including myself) were recommending to grab socket939 systems instead of socket754 because of a better/longer upgrade path... guess that'll learn me. ;)

jmke 22nd June 2006 06:52

I think that was never a wrong approach as the S754 is budget only, there are no high end CPUs for S754 available

Kougar 23rd June 2006 02:29

True, but some of those people were after the absolute cheapest option, and instead went with a 939 motherboard. Granted the price difference wasn't very much and they get better performance, but their window of opportunity to upgrade their CPUs will be over pretty shortly. Although since AMD will be slashing their prices first I guess you're right, they'll get their one last chance at a good price. ;)
