win xp encrypted files a friend of mine formated and reinstalled win xp pro on his D partition he backed up his data. after installing he notices that he can't acces some files because they are encrypted. i went to take a look and he is logged in as Adminstrator, he has all permisions to the files BUT he can't decrypt the files, windows keeps saying he has no access. solution anyone? |
select all files/directories right mouse -> properties security tab -> take/change ownership |
don't you need a key to decrypt them? i'd think a take ownership isn't enough. because otherwise if your a local admin you can decrypt file from the network. I'd have to look in my book's to be sure |
take ownership = enough :) |
Thx guy's! Gonna try that, but i still find it very strange that the local admin does not have the right to do this. |
"reinstalled win xp pro" by doing so XP generates a new SID (security ID) and the "old" files were encrypted by the old SID, so by the default the new SID won't be able to read them but taking ownership of the files shouldn't be any problem |
oh yes, now I get it! thx :ws: |
