the nic is no longer displayed, instead, there is now a "network bridge"

I set this on the client:

IP address : 192.168.0.212 (I filled this in after ipconfig)
subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 (auto filled in)
default gateway : 192.168.0.1 (auto filled in)

after that, both pc's could use internet with NIS enabled (after allowing 192.168.0.212 in NIS)

after that, the "network bridge" on the server already had the following filled in:
IP address : 192.168.0.1
subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
default gateway : (blank)

network bridge?? uhm..

do you have 2 network cards in your server?
does one of them lead to your internet modem?

if the answer to both Q's is "YES", then disable that network bridge.

nope, I use the onboard network controllers on both the abit nf7-s v2.0 and the asus p4c800-e deluxe.

asus-->switch-->abit

alcatel speedtouch USB modem on the abit

when I use the option "map network drive" I can get to the other pc but since it's a dial-in connection, it gets a new ip address every time it has to log in again...

argh. then YES you have 2 network cards, it doesn't matter if they are onboard or not.

follow TeuS' excellent network howto guide to the letter and you'll have it all sorted out very quickly

switch "telenet" settings for "adsl connection" settings

don't use enternet 300 for ADSL dail-up, get rasppoe (exact name Bosw8er knows by heart *help*)

How does this work? it's an usb modem, the only 2 physical connections it makes is 1 usb cable and 1 phone cable (rj-12? don't hit me if it's wrong).

Then there is 1 rj-45 connection and that's the FTP calbe coming from the switch

to me, that's only 1 nic/pc

nways, I'll give Teus' guide another try when I got the pc's to myself. although we don't have a tab to share internet like in the screenie

one more thing; what do you mean by:

if you're talking about the dial-in software, I'm just using the one that came with the modem.

List the model number of your USB modem. Sounds to me you have a DSL USB Modem and not a wire/wireless router.

Do you have the following:
1) DSL or cable modem.
2) Router wire or wireless or both.
3) USB Lan or PCI lan card.

What exactly do you have?

maybe this 'll clarify a few things

Sidney 10th June 2004 20:38

Excellent chart.... what is the switch between Abit and Asus.

jmke 10th June 2004 20:39

ay USB modem, nothing but bad experiences with those :/

Connection between Router and Work Station could either be RJ45 or Wireless if so equipped.
