movies (mov files)

I have some mov files which I cannot play, I hear sound but I don't see any visuals. when playing them with windvd as well as bsplayer as media player 10. I have 'the codecs' installed latest version.
can someone help me?

is it impossible to play these with wmp?

(vote+1 for dumbest thread by an intellectual in two years)

use "convert mov" in google.... lot's of software available out there

:)

jmke 2nd November 2004 19:45

Nope, certain older .MOV files use a codec which is not public, thereby there was never a plugin for WMP.
I suggest to use "Media Player Classic" (google it) , it plays everything WMP does, but better, and also plays .MOV and .RM (realplayer)

here's a similar thread to yours : http://forums.3ivx.com/cgi-bin/ikonb...m=11&topic=145

btw, this is not a dumb thread, there can only be dumb replies:)

On my fathers laptop there's a plugin there plays .mov files in WMP.

Dunno the name, have to search it.

maybe click the link I posted? 3ivx plays the recent .MOV files; on older ones which you another codec it only plays the sound.

from 3IVX

After installing 3ivx, WMP just plays the sound but not the video

it's my understanding that WMP will only play mov or qt files IF they are UNcompressed, this is a legacy thing from the era of win 3.1, before apple codecs that wmp couldn't use, and wouldn't share the code.

since you are getting the sound, that's probably not compressed
but the video is, so you should play it in quicktime (which may have the custom codec), if that doesn't work i'd upgrade your version of quicktime to version 6.1
you can get it at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

thanx y'all.

The Senile Doctor 5th November 2004 10:12

I have the same problem on that setup with wmv files...

could you possibly need quicktime for those too?

jmke 5th November 2004 10:19

WMV stands for Windows Media Audio/Video File

it will work with Windows Media Player without issue;

The Senile Doctor 5th November 2004 10:26

weird...
very very weird...
i'll get back at this this weekend

DUR0N 5th November 2004 19:12

you probably don't have the mediaplayer 9 or 10 codec.

well the files are wmv files, playing them with as well windows media player 9 as 10, playing them with bsplayer, playing them with windvd generates same problem.
the sound is there, the visuals are absent.
mpeg files play perfectly

StaRflaM 6th November 2004 21:37

VideoLAN is also a very good player, but i prefer BSplayer .

The Senile Doctor 7th November 2004 08:39

well...problem solved and the solution is very easy but also very confusing.

I have ati catalyst center installed and 4.10 cats...
apparently when installing ati catalyst it changed the settings for video playback for some files to contrast 0%. thus eliminating any visuals...
the movie was playing, it was just not visible.

jmke 7th November 2004 08:47

allow me to so, bwahahah ;)

The Senile Doctor 7th November 2004 09:11

:)
and that got me to install and reinstall about a ton of codecs and players.
I am specialized in NON-problems :)

jmke 7th November 2004 18:21
