mo' money mo' problems

I 'm trying to set up a network using Teus' howto but I can't get into network connections. Not through start and not via the control pannel.

the pc hangs for a while if I so much as hover over the network connections tab in the start menu,
and throught the control pannel, it's like the whole pc is stressing out and then after a minute or so it tells me it didn't find anything and that i have to make sure that "network connection settings" (or somehting, i forgot the exact message) are enabled.

I had something similar before without the pc having such a hard time with it before but that was with a different windows install and a different hdd.

I use win xp pro
and a diva adsl usb modem (the green ray model)

I've scanned with spysweeper (adaware and spybot aren't installed yet)
norton antivirus and interenet securtiy 2004 are active

there's some other problems that may or may not be related:
pc is slower and has a hard time with a lot of things (even with typing it can't' keep up :s)then before (new hdd, new mobo, new win xp pro install)
norton didn't work for a couple of days most likely due to a virus of some sort but then (seemed) to work fine since...
voice conversations are sometimes near impossible (probably due to new mobo)

1) make sure you have the proper XP driver.
2) go to "set up home or small office network" .... make sure the USB device is present and continue on setup. Take your time....
3) ID your file sharings and make sure you have the "right".

Even a TI-99 (1978) could keep up with your key strokes .... you have other problems. Check what kind of activities are running (background) at Window Task Manager.;-)

I'd re-install windows....

1) the alcatal modem has the proper drivers installed (if that's what you mean)
2) tomorrow
3) I'm admin so I have the right, dno what you mean by "ID your files" though
4) Just checked, nothing unusual running in taskmanager as far as I can recongnize the processes running (wich is far from all) (I'll upload screenshot of processess tomorrow)

bis: noh, not a repair/re-install again  that's the last resort, after reinstall of the modem drivers and the rest lazyman suggested ;)

thx for the help so far :) nn

(me be wasted me be 22 as of today
:king: )

just tryed the network connection wizard via the win xp cd, didn't work, looks like I'll be doing a format again :/

You think it would help if I just did a repair of the original install? or a full repair? or a format?

kristos 23rd July 2004 16:24
