malfunctioning hardware

the rig:

asus A7n8x-deluxe rev.2, with the default BIOS (1007)
barton 2500+
Enermax 350W PSU
Ti4200
maxtor 120gb hdd SATA

ALL at stock speed

my first board was great but the BIOS got messed up. then I got this new board. let's start with the voltage problem: with my first board, and with my multimeter connected to the PSU I got the same voltages. with the new board, I got worse voltage rails

when I raise the voltage of the CPU above 1.75vcore, my screen goes black when loading windows and the PC doesn't react any more. the higher the vcore, the earlier that happens. It might have been the same problem like with my first board, but I'm not sure

when I voltmod my ti4200, the PC also hangs. with my first board, that certainly didn't happen.... everything was fine!

So, in the beginning everything was fine. after a while, my PC started to give that black screen again when playing RTCW: Enemy Territory more and more often. I haven't tested the machine with other games (yet)

now it's happening I get the black screen in Windows, a few days ago two times in 10 minutes so I lowered the FSB to 133. then the hanging quit. today, my screen went black again while gaming.

So I'll check these parts:
- memory. it's kingston BH-6 ram, 2*256MB, PC3200. never had problems with it
- PSU. the PSU worked one day without fan in it... it got hot and the machine hung in the evening. this was with my first mainboard.
- mainboard. I think there's something wrong with the voltage regulation

for the memory, I'll start memtest now. how should I check all other parts now?

change HW + 3dmarking + prime, but in what sequence?
I have an aopen 300W PSU and a 2000+ available for testing

TeuS 23rd February 2004 15:06

I just set my FSB/timings/... to default (optimal) settings. I loaded this clean win2000 install and started the memory test from windows; after a few minutes my screen turned blank again

I'll let the machine idle for a while and see if it keeps running well

How are the mosfets?
Insane hot, normal or very cool?

TeuS 23rd February 2004 16:49

strange. I had a 5v fan on my SLK800, when I changed it for a more powerful fan (coolermaster fan, tempcontrolled with Q-Tec) the machine quit crashing

the mosfets are now cold, with the silent fan they were normal (warm)

When you want to overclock heat will become a major problem. If you want to get better stability and extend the lifetime of your hardware, this guide might be quite helpful to you. Cooling hardware exists of several parts: Thermal Paste, The Heatsink and Fans.

3dmark still crashes, both with 800*600 and 1024*768 resolution. ET always hangs at 1027*786 but not at 800*600

when 3dmark is running I'm getting this voice error message from my mainboard all the time: CPU fan fail. I also (used to) get that with ET under 1024*768

TeuS 23rd February 2004 17:37

I changed the drivers, same problem.
BTW, it's not the CPU fan fail error I'm getting. I'm getting the voice message "system failed CPU test" all the time

I tried to run the machine with FSB 166, memory 133mhz and the problem doesn't go away. tomorrow I'll put an other ti4200 in it, and use a 300W PSU

Hi, all!
We figured it out: what went bad was the power supply!
The 3.3v inputs were bad, causing the CPU to not receive the proper amount of voltage it required in order to function.
We swapped out the power supply, and voila: not only did it end the CPU test failure.. it also fixed the display problem! "

I had the same problem when I first bought my a7n8x deluxe. That robo b!tch repeating "System failed cpu test" every 2 seconds drove me up the wall!!"

PSU's can be a hard problem to track, had a mobo that worked with CPU A, but not with CPU B, after 4 hours of searching it was due to a faulty PSU.

TeuS 23rd February 2004 18:06

JMke, I'll lower the multiplier of the CPU. too bad you can't lower the vcore of the CPU on this board, lowering the Vcore puts quite a lot less tension on the PSU

does anybody know how to measure the 3.3volt rail? I don't seem to find the right wire to check

jmke 23rd February 2004 18:17

you should be able to find it here somewhere http://www.madshrimps.be/gotofaqlink.php?linkid=1460

The orange wires are for +3.3V, but on some PSUs the +3.3V wires are brown, and on some Dells they're blue with a white stripe running down them. The -5V is on the blue wire, the -12V on the white wire, but they're almost never used any more, not even for RS-232C serial ports, and they're allowed to be off by 10%.

How accurate is your meter? The worst digital ones are rated for 1% on DC volts, the best reasonably priced ones around 0.02%. IOW that 12.76V, could either be slightly off specs (6% high) or OK if the meter is inaccurate. Also some PSUs require minimum loads to make their voltages accurate, like 1A @ +12V or 1-3A @ +5V, and I've seen good PSUs put out voltages that were off by 10% when run without load.

does anyone know how the 3.3v mod exactly works?

what resistors + potmeters do I have to use, and does my potmeter start at max resistance or not?

TeuS 23rd February 2004 22:23

ah, a good pic

http://home.no.net/comerade/3,3v-mod.gif

a 15ohm fixed and a 100ohm or larger pot appears to be better though

just watch out when playing with voltages, expensive toys you're tinkering with.

I know, I check voltmods several times

especially PSU's are dangerous to mess with... as I've prolly already said, the PSU from my suitcase PC trashed the mainboard, two NIC's, the soundcard, itself, the wireless mouse transmitter and the HDD

fortunately, the memory and the CPU survived it

what do you think JMke, is this 350W PSU not enough to power all this hardware? I think so, but the 3.3v rail is actually the only problem

jmke 23rd February 2004 22:45

the AMD XP lives from the 3.3/5v rail, if that one is lower or faulty it can take down a 450Watt PSU

that PSU might work perfectly with a P4 system though, I had a no-name 300Watt, its 5 dropped to 4.62v and the system would crash when I put my little XP1600+ @ 1800Mhz with 1.85v

TeuS 24th February 2004 10:38

i've set my CPU to 9.5*166 (1557mhz).

in windows my 3.3v rail is ~3.04volt, with my multimeter I get 3.08 volt :)

TeuS 24th February 2004 14:54

hmm. the PSU was lying on it's side with the fan on 5V.

I've blown the dirt out of the PSU and noticed the heatsinks in it were still very hot.
I've put the PSU in it's normal position (with the hole for the 92mm fan up. btw there's no 92mm fan in it, only a grill) and gave the fan 12v. now my 3.3v line is stable like hell at 3.30 volt (multimeter) and 3.25volt (MBM)

great, I hope the problem is fixed now. btw, the PSU is making a high-pitched sound (didn't notice that before), is that normal?

TeuS 24th February 2004 15:47

3.28 ~ 3.29, stable. fan at 7V

before RTCW:ET always crashed at 1024*768, now it's working fine again at that resolution :o

jmke 24th February 2004 16:16

When I read this thread it just screams at you: "ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN"

tsssss. my 3.3 dropped to 3.10 after a while. I didn't voltmod it because idle the PSU was already at 3.45volt so a vmod would be a bad idea

I've hooked an aopen 300W I bought dirt cheap from BonBon on to it. under load my 3.3V line STAYS exactly 3.3Volt

a 7,5€ PSU just outperformed a 75€ PSU
