KDE or Gnome Since i'm new to linux i want to learn as much as possible so i will try to do a lot in cli mode, but i also need a GUI. So now my question is: which is the best and why? KDE or Gnome or ... |
KDE is a bit more like the windows look & feel, has a tremendous amount of apps/games and looks okay. Gnome looks a bit more like Max OSX, has a limited amount of apps (feels less like bloatware), and looks excellent. I used to use KDE, but I just *love* the looks/user interface of Gnome > 2.4. : ) |
I'm rather for KDE. try em both, and pick the one you like most |
xfce4 !! :) RB: when typing emerge -av gnome you see what apps come with it ... I mean wtf that's a huuuge list, even browser, music player, ... included in the desktopmanager true gnome2.6 is $$$$ but xfce4 is so much nicer imo (yes I know it's using gnome libraries) just my 2cents maybe something else: some say: dropline is great haven't tried it tho greetz nip |
XFCE4 is my favourite lightweight desktop too. I don't use lightweight desktops on a 2.5Ghz A64 though. :) I'm very happy with gnome 2.8, feels much more stable than 2.6. |
haven't tried it, I will soon on my newly installed gentoo tho :) switching over from slackware, hope it's gonna work out :) |
That huuuuuge list that comes with gnome can be diminuished by "emerge -av gnome-light". Only the desktop & the filemanager & the gnome-terminal will be emerged then. |
Thanks for the gnome-light tip Mangum! :super: I introduced Ubuntu (with gnome 2.8) at work last week for a few non-critical desktops, and windows users seem to love it. Intuitive and pretty desktop free of spyware/viri rox. :) |
