Default image partition from one system to another

should be a routine thing on paper ... alas

Bought emachines EL1700 as replacement
nforce 630i chipset

Current OS: Win2K
1) Installed nvidia drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.24.html (win2K is supported!)
2) Rebooted
3) Took image of drive
4) Put image on emachines

outcome 1
bleuscreen: inaccessible bootdevice

Re-doing this routine i noticed the SATA - drivers are not installed when installing the mentioned nvidia-driver.

Attempt 2
1) I installed the SATA-drivers manually in win2k (via "add hardware")
2) Rebooted
3) Took image of drive
4) Put image on emachines

outcome 2
bleuscreen: inaccessible bootdevice

humor
emachines hasn't got a floppy, can't do a clean W2K install (can't load sata-drivers)
There wasn't an install Vista disk with the emachines, don't know how to restore the Vista partition

It was VIA

uninstalled VIA drivers
re-installed NVIDIA drivers
image partition (no-reboot)
put image on emachines

same result

Must be the sata II drivers aren't compatible with W2K

Possible solutions:
Install fresh XP (vista is no solution as 2 main apps aren't compatible)
Intall Ubuntu + Wine

Most likely = solution 1
but where can i buy a license? someone willing to ship one (all expenses paid)?
