Cooler for Maxtor HDD?

Today,i´ll pick my new HDD,first of SATA generation.Untill now i was using only UDMA models.HDD is Maxtor 250gb,16MB cache,SATA150.Do i have to install some fan cooler for HDD? Thanks! :D

jmke 7th November 2005 12:46

not needed no as long as your case is well ventilated

stillstupid 7th November 2005 23:52

Hmmm...2x80mm(rear&top),1x120mm left side fan.No front fan, because LCD is placed there(codegen 6044-AL,pretty big case coming with poor PSU,but i¨ll solve that-useful tip fom Lazyman).
Now,i¨m having another problem(i`m sure trivial for you,JMke).I can¨t manage my SATA drive¨:system recognized HDD(in control panel-system-hardware-device manager-"device is working properly";driver is also O.K.).But, in "my computer" i can "see" only one of old PATA HDD;i leaved him for data transfer to new HDD.I restarted comp.-"status quo".Do i have to set SATA drive something like "slave",or even disconnect PATA drive and install winXP,or...it´s just another broken HDD,wich is not hard to achieve here in Croatia.Thank you,my (if i may say,not to offend you) new online friends.

stillstupid 8th November 2005 00:04

...and model is DIAMONDMAX 10 6L200S0 200GB,16MB cache SATA150(250 GB was currently unaviable).

jmke 8th November 2005 09:09

right click my computer -> select manage -> to go "disk management"

then right click on the new SATA drive and create a new partition and format it!

Rutar 8th November 2005 10:13

heh, Maxtors run notoriously hot

too late to advise on a Samsung Spinpoint :(

stillstupid 8th November 2005 11:06

I was running only Maxtor HDD´s for last five years.I N E V E R had even minor problem for all this time...and i´m FAR AWAY from some advanced PC user.
It´s not hard to understand why i prefere Maxtor. ; )
...and,if JMke said that i don¨t need extra coolers,THAT¨S THE LAW FOR ME!:ws: :ws: :ws: :ws:
(no offence Rutar;) )

stillstupid 8th November 2005 12:35

Ah,yes i¨m gratefull JMke,as allways:klap:
Your tip solved my problem. ;)

stillstupid 9th November 2005 10:51

...and now something completely different!!!

Me again.
...and my SATA drive.:chop:
I tried to make totally new instalation of WinXP and whole system(leaving only SATA drive, without previous PATA¨s).But at the point of first restart(after i made partitions on new disc),installation stops with message"system instalation error" or something like that .:grum:
Do i have to install RAID driver or what?
Is RAID necessary for SATA proper function?
...and F6 is not respondindg durring instalation!
Detailed process description needed, like JMKE allways do.Thank you, people:banana:

jmke 9th November 2005 11:02

what motherboard? did your motherboard come with a floppy disk with SATA (raid) drivers?

if yes, you'll have to add the driver during WinXP setup by pressing F6 ... it F6 "does nothing" check your keyboard:)

let me know where I can send the invoice to for all the online support:p

stillstupid 9th November 2005 12:24

Motherboard is epox 8KDA3I nF3 250.
And yes,i have CD ROM.I tried to install RAID drivers(formated floppy disc inserted, data copied from CD ROM to floppy),but F6 is still not responding(untill yesterday afternoon, before i removed PATA,keyboard was o.k.).What to do?
Do i have to use some of Maxtor diagnostic/utility tools?
How to "bypass" F6,if possible?

jmke 9th November 2005 12:33

try another keyboard?:) you need to press F6 when you see the message pop up during the initial XP setup.

stillstupid 9th November 2005 12:44

O.K.,i¨ll try.Thanks!

stillstupid 9th November 2005 22:18

Not helped-problem remains even with new keyboard-no F6&no winXP installation.I tried my friends XP(other version)-nothing helped.
Someone experienced with installation of Maxstor's SATA HDD on Epox MOBO based system?! I'm sure that i'm not the only one with that/similar problem!!!

FreeStyler 9th November 2005 23:44

try connecting the keyboard vi P/S2 if it's connected with USB now. That might help.

What JM says is true, you'll need to pre load the drivers for the SATA controller (doesn't have to be raid) into the windows installer otherwise it won't find your drives.

Are you sure you are pressing the F6 key on time, it's the first blue screen of the windows installer, and it will just move on even if you don't do anything. So there re no other question on it. It just tells you to push F6 in a grey bar near the bottom if you need it..

stillstupid 11th November 2005 07:51

Both keyboards was connected via P/S2.To find keyboard via usb,and try again?I downloaded SATA drivers from Epox official site-useless(nF3 SATA drivers&mass storage controler-tool for identification&managing HDD's over 137GB).Both was required for installation by winXP.Also i tried to install win2000-F6 stopped me again.I noticed one more thing:if i continue installation after F6 dialog box( yes, first bliue screen FreeStyler, after that is option F2-microsoft recovery console, right,(and F2 is working without problems!!!),then win. are warning me about "CD/DVD,HDD,SCSI orther unknown device attached"(or somethinhg like that),asking me manufacturers floppy to be inserted for proper identification of device.System recognize drivers, both marked as "required",then i choosed them for instalalation, then everything was perfect,as i said in my previous posts, untill first reboot."error loading op.system".FROZEN PC!!!!
Is there any chance that HDD is damaged?
Thanks FreeStyler for your post.Did you had ever similar problems,or knowing someone with'em?

stillstupid 11th November 2005 12:11

Huh,and what if onboard SATA controller is not working properly? Is that possible?:(
If yes,how to recognize/check that?

stillstupid 14th November 2005 00:57

I solved THE PROBLEM! I will telll you tomorrow what happend...(currently,i have no more power to THINK...).SS is gone to SLEEP!

stillstupid 14th November 2005 11:12

O,yes,i feel good today...:king:
I found some small program for creating bootable floppy disc.Downloaded sata drivers for my MOBO from Epox official site, created floppy,and...IT'S WOOORKIIIING!!!:o
Obviously,MOBO's CD was problematic in creating bootable floppy with SATA drivers in DOS mode. So,anyone having similar/same problem, now you'll know what to do.;) SS is proude,'cause i solved The Problem on my own.
But,THANKS everyone who tried to help me about this subject.:hello:
(...and my new Maxtor is NOISY,but that's O.K. as long as is working properly)
O,yes,i feel good today...:D

jmke 14th November 2005 21:47

that's great news SS :super:

so you pressed the F6 during XP setup, inserted the floppy and it worked?

stillstupid 15th November 2005 12:04

Yes JMke,F6 still remains mystery(if i don't press it,i still get an option after while to specify device ("S"),with "handmade" bootable floppy.EVERYHING IS WORKING;FASTER AND BETTER(at least for me me;that's what's counting, right?).
Greetings from sunny Croatia;)

jmke 15th November 2005 12:19

"if i don't press it,i still get an option after while to specify device"
ah, a stuck key then? ;)

stillstupid 2nd December 2005 11:07

Maybe, but i can live with that.
Thanks again,JMke,for your time&patience;)
...and other guys,too:D
