Administrator doesn't have control

I have 1 pc that's not self-assembled (compaq).
I have 7 pc's that are self assembled.

Guess which one gives me the most problems running 24/7 ... right !

Logged in as Administrator in W2K i cannot save programs were i want (says i don't have permission), i cannot install certain programs (says i cannot create directory's), i cannot run certain programs anymore (like folding at home - says i don't have permission) ... i even cannot make an image-file on the data-partition (i don't have permission).

Must be some ntfs security setting or compaq monitoring sh**

:grum:

the maniak 25th August 2003 18:21

simple solution, format that thing and install it yourself

jmke 25th August 2003 18:35

make sure that the administrator accounts has full control access on the whole C:\ drive (all its files and folders)

Bosw8er 25th August 2003 22:44

Will try tomorrow, thanx

Bosw8er 26th August 2003 10:43

Trying to make an image of C on E (fat32 data partition):

"The file name, location or format E:\image.tib is not valid. Please type the file name or location in the correct format."

:grum:

To do:
- check & clean box completly
- scandisk
- re-install W2K over existing OS-partition (cannot do clean install because of 3th party software)

Bosw8er 26th August 2003 12:51

:(

jmke 26th August 2003 13:17

uhm that's normal.. restart the machine & scandisk will run.

Bosw8er 26th August 2003 15:02

Hmm, cannot remember seeing that message before.

Box is cleaned *cough*, changed to more powerful fan, other stick of ram, scandisk = OK, SP3 crashed, SP4 crashes after install and reboot (missing dll), full repair from W2K CD (still dll missing), ... winsrv.dll is still missing, cannot safe boot, cannot go back to "last known good config", ...

always a blue screen to remind me there is no winsrv.dll, don't know how to put it in place ...

:grum: :grum: :grum:

jmke 26th August 2003 16:10

recovery console maybe? I think it is best to create a new installation on a seperate HD, and keep the current HD you have now, then hook it up to the fresh install to recover/add winsrv.dll

change HD's around & try to reboot

Bosw8er 26th August 2003 16:23

I've put an old image back.
I will be a nice boy for an hour or two now. :grum:

Is there a setting somewhere that prohibits downloading progs to your HD ?

EDIT: found it myself

Bosw8er 26th August 2003 17:04

It was a combination of:
- ultrasecure firewall settings (tiny personal firewall version 3 has xtreme settings)
- NTFS security
- dust and heat

another afternoon down the drain

HW & SW problems are quickly resolved ... most of the time.

Need for a trained mysql & php programmer for building up an entirely new managing program : clients and their very extensive database + personel + documentation centre + legislation + easy fill in method & transport + remote access + easy managebility (?) ... will be for next year or so. I have a meeting about that this thursday.

Thx you for your free offer :D

jmke 26th August 2003 17:40

wasn't referring to myself with professional IT :p

Thx, if you need a usefull (!) project for final exams, lemme know ! I have 2 close friends that are into programming and they will do the checkup/follow up. Haven't found sufficient time for task - description, which is 50% of the actual work.

I'm tired of looking at brochures of crappy software and their outrageous pricetags ... and i'm tired of making self-made & totally unprofessional solutions, but they work 24/7 and the cost = only my time.

RichBa5tard 26th August 2003 21:16

No problem, a usefull project with some checkup is all I ask. If you need my CV I'll send it after my exams. :) I don't know PHP, but i'm a quick study.

Only drawback is I would have to commute between your work and leuven. Is it accessible by train?

Bosw8er 26th August 2003 21:25

Commute ? You do your work in Leuven, that's easier ... and besides, i don't have a spare seat for you at work :D

I'll know more after thursday. There should be a bunch of people trying to construct something likewise, but they are already trying it for sooooooo long i think it will; or never finish, or be completly outdated when it's done.

I'll mail you friday.

RichBa5tard 26th August 2003 21:32

Work at home? Excellent, yet another excuse to upgrade my hardware. :D

No seriously, i will have to commute a lot the first week(s). Everything needs to be outlined perfectly before i can get to the actual programming. I'll await your email.

Hmmm, interesting :)

For next year, I'm also looking for a place to be the 'trainee' for 6 months ... analist/programmer/...

already 'know' php ... ( check this site ;) )

2 for the price of .. none :)

Bosw8er 27th August 2003 10:17

hehe, ... at this rate i'll have 10 people on this project by the end of the week :D

Thx for the offer, i'll know more on friday.

FreeStyler 27th August 2003 16:01

I know **** about programming, but would like to get paid for doing nothing...

Bosw8er 27th August 2003 16:42

RB & Senti

Any experience with:

http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/
http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/tomcat/

?

FreeStyler: good thinking ! I might hire you as "black sheep", any team should have one :D

RichBa5tard 28th August 2003 18:13

No experience with the 2 products you've mentioned, but i'm eager to learn them the next few months.

If you want programmers with experience: csbconsulting.com offers Java specialists for as little as 350 eur a day. :p
