SpeedTests: Cable/ADLS/Modem Tweaks & Others

Hopefully this will help some of you out as that is the bottom line, these are my ideas and will not harm your computer. I want to thank Speedguide , as they work hard to bring you the best, yes the Optimizer works with dialup connections too, the Optimizer dialup connections see # 28

If you have not, please click on profile in one of your posts and fill in, we want to help you but we need to know what you have and where you are from for speedtest purposes.

Please turn System restore on at least for one night so you have backup, not during Speedtest but before you go sweepy, then in morning turn back off, you now have a restore point, remember date, to restore you have to turn system restore back on, Have not figured out how to use backedup registry in Win XP as it does not add or subtract anything from your registry, it wont save you like previous verions.

First, if you do not have SG's Optimizer, please do, it's wonderfull, ping test included with it, here's how:
Download SG Optimizer to your DESKTOP, Optimizer in my signature and below.
Select connection type at top of Optimizer, then select optimal settings, select adapter you are using, select custom settings if you wish to enter different Tcp Recieve Window, Tcp1323Opts, scaling should be checked if Tcp Recieve is above 65535, not checked if below 65535.

For Win XP Professional:
1. Start -> Run -> "secpol.msc"
2. Go to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options"
3. Double click on "Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile" and enable it.

9.) Repair Internet Explorer in XP
The only way to repair Internet Explorer is to have sfc check the system files by running the command sfc /scannow from the Command Window (Start > Run). Put XP disk in, click on exit when it comes up on screen, leave disk in, type in run box off Start sfc /scannow and click OK. (Space between c and /)

If the above does not work see here:

IE6 Slowdowns and Hangs:

If Internet Explorer (IE) 6 is slowing to a crawl and/or hanging and starts to use 100 percent of CPU time it may well be a corruption of the "Temporary Internet Files folder". In particular, trying to delete Temporary Internet files via Tools, Internet Options or other privacy software seems to trigger this behavior. Also, attempts to view files in the Temporary Internet Files folder may show the folder as already empty when it is not. This behavior occurs because the Temporary Internet files database is corrupt.

The Temporary Internet files aren't really files but entries in %systemdrive%\Do***ents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat. Deleting that file solves the problem. This same problem has occured for NT users and the fix works for XP.

1. Open a command prompt window on the desktop (Start/Run/command).

2. Exit IE and Windows Explorer (iexplore.exe and explorer.exe, respectively, in Task Manager, i.e - Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Processes/End Process for each).

3. Use the following command exactly from your command prompt window to delete the corrupt file:

C:\>del "%systemdrive%\Do***ents and Settings\%username%\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat"

4. Restart Windows Explorer with Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Applications/New Task/Browse/C:\Windows\explorer.exe[or your path]) or Shutdown/Restart the computer from Task Manager.

IE should now work properly.

10.) To reinstall IE6 :

To Reinstall IE6:
1) Insert the Win XP CD, click exit when it appears on screen
2) Open Start / Run and type:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf
Press Enter

14.) PPPoE Problems, please go to Bobs site, he is member at SG and has a great site: http://www.carricksolutions.com/

15.) What is PPPoE- DSL users only, MTU 1492- PPPoE you have to log on with name and password. (Not log on to Windows, but to get on net)
PPPoE ( Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet ) is a method for building PPP sessions and encapsulating packets, as described in RFC2516.
Although it is not a standard, PPPoE is already being used by a number of DSL providers. It requires either routers that have built-in PPPoE support, or PPPoE software to "dial up" and establish the session.
PPPoE MTU in XP is 1480

How do I (somewhat) reliably test my Internet speed ?
Most importantly, please note that your throughput (speed) depends not only on your PC, but also your ISPs backbone, the connectivity/congestion of the server you're downloading from (as well as every router on the way to you), distance between the server and client, Internet congestion at the time, etc.
The best time to test is when general Internet traffic is low, i.e. 3-6 AM.

It's a good idea to clear Temporary Internet Files after each test to get a correct reading, otherwize files might be cached locally.

The right way: The most reliable speed test is by downloading multiple large files from distant servers (not within your ISP's domain). In order to average throughput over multiple connecctions you would need a program such as Net Stat Live from AnalogX installed and running. Net Stat Live here:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...etwork/nsl.htm
Try downloading large files from a fast server, here is a example:

ftp://ftp.lucasarts.com/

Try downloading some of this file:
ftp://ftp.lucasarts.com/demos/pc/Dx5eng.exe

If you use router go to who makes router website and make sure you have newest firmware downloaded and installed.

XP users to create a shutdown or REBOOT icon on desktop:
To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:
Right click on an open area of the desktop
Select New / Shortcut
Enter in "shutdown -s -t 00" - no quotes
Press the Next button
For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use shutdown. Click on the Finish button.

For a reboot, enter "shutdown -r -t 00"
For a logoff, enter "shutdown -l -t 00"

NOTE: If you RIGHT click on blank space on speed test site then select create shortcut, it puts shortcut on your desktop

Do NOT right click and choose delete, not only do you uninstall program but Windows files too, always use uninstall program or add/remove through control panel, if you have done this, in Win 98/SE* jmke go to help and run system file checker (sfc), you only care about Windows and subfolders, files are on installation disk.

In Win 2000:
Run the System File Checker Every Few Weeks
The System File Checker (SFC), another built-in program, checks all system files against the known good version of each. It is very useful for security because hackers and malicious programs generally make changes to systems. If SFC finds anything wrong, you will need to have the original CD from which your system was installed before SFC can automatically fix whatever is damaged. To run SFC:
Go from Start to Run
Enter sfc

If on XP Home Edition and you have Pro tweaks in registry this will not work
If on Win XP: Put XP disk in, click on exit when it comes up, leave disk in, you may be missing critical system files, type in RUN box sfc /scannow and click OK. (Space between c and /) Takes about 10 minutes
