what is holding me back

specs:
P IV 2.4c @3Ghz (Sl6WF Malay)
Corsair pc 3700 @ 250
Fsb 250 (1:1)
Hercules 9800 np @ 420/375
Maxtor sata 120 GB
Asus p4c 800 e deluxe (last bios update)
chieftec 360 watt

I can 't overclock further, when I set fsb at 265 I receive errors with prime95 (rounding was expected less than 0.5 or something)
When I set my FSB to 270 the message ' irql not less or equal' appear and a memory dump starts.
I've tried 3:2 and 5:4 but no succes.
My temps stay under 45°C (asus probe).

Can it be my powersupply? I have 5 casefans ( vantec tornado is for sale), 3 ccfls also.

probably not, my guess is your cpu won't go any further.

ram = ok as you have divided it (3:2, 5:4)

wutske 22nd June 2004 16:40

the best thin to find out whether your PSU is holding u back, is checking the voltages. Maybe upping the VCore will help (but not too high, P4's don't like that).

The Senile Doctor 22nd June 2004 16:44

upping the vcore could put more strain on your psu, that's no way of checking the psu...

wutske 22nd June 2004 16:47

The VCore upping is to OC a bit further ;) .

calimero 22nd June 2004 16:57

Voltages are stable while stressing (prime 95).
I pushed vcore to 1.6V, i think it s high enough with stock cooling:).
I will test it again how far I can get my cpu, i thought the 2.4c was able to oc further :(

The Senile Doctor 22nd June 2004 17:02

sometimes yes, maybe it'll be stable at 1.6 volts and 265 fsb, however I doubt your ram can take that 1:1

jmke 22nd June 2004 17:04

my P4 2.4C is stable at 3200mhz, anything higher requires a lot of extra vcore :/

calimero 22nd June 2004 17:14

Jmke how much voltage is given to your cpu?
At what FSB, ram frequency?

jmke 22nd June 2004 17:25

you know the FSB :)
ram frequency doesn't matter either

voltage: 1.65v @ 3.2
for higher I need 1.7+

calimero 22nd June 2004 17:41

when i set 1.6 vcore in bios, in windows my voltage is higher (+-1.675, while stressing vcore drops a bit. So your vcore is 1.65 is bios?

And i'm not planning to do a droopmod, it's a waste of time for a bit more performance :D

It's all chip dependent;

The following is what I've experienced with Northwood.

1) One 2.4C no matter how high the vcore, it wouldn't go over 3.06 ghz.
2) Second 2.4C 3.24 Ghz 270 FSB @1.70 Volt; 275FSB 1.725 V.
3) 2.6C no matter how high the vcore; 3.32 or 255 FSB.
4) 2.8C no matter how high the vcore 250FSB

None is restricted by memory; it's the nature of the particular processor. The 2A could go 3.34 Ghz at 1.750V.

For p4, you don't want over 1.80 Volt; non temp related, the proc will have a sudden death from over voltage rather than death from heat.

Some lucky guy will get 3.6 Ghz from 2.4C with 1.70 Volt; some wouldn't get over 3 Ghz.

calimero 22nd June 2004 22:24

When is set my FSB to 260 I have to push the vcore to 1.7 in bios, otherwise i receive errors in prime. In windows while prime95 is running it gave me a vcore of +-1.6 and it' s stable.

Is the vcore psu dependant?
BTW 3.3v and 5V are veryy stable, only 12V goes to +-11.75

Others may have different opinons; here is mine.

Accurate voltage power supply delivers clean power to a mother board that has below specs power delivery = low voltage at the end.

Most boards are under volt. We would only hope the voltage sensor reading is accurate adding another variable.

yep, my opinion too, get a better PSU, had the same problem with my mobile. The chieftec is a nice standard PSU but not when you go to decent oc. and this is a nice oc already.

changed my chieftec 360 to enermax 465 and mobile went stable from 2500 to 26++

It 's strange because my 3.3v, 12v,5v are very stable. only my vcore drops(0.1) while stressing and that's the reason why i can t oc further.
I''ll try to bench without those fans (vantec tornado needs a lot of power).

calimero 23rd June 2004 12:03

after reading this i know that 's not psu related but it's chip dependant.

calimero 23rd June 2004 13:08

jmke did you do any mods on your p4c800???

jmke 23rd June 2004 13:12

nope, it's stock

overclock is Chip and PSU dependant, eliminating the PSU by getting a HQ one will make the job easier ;)

calimero 2nd July 2004 15:48

Which PSU do you suggest?

I've read good things about antec and tagan PSU's

calimero 2nd July 2004 17:50

:s

jmke 2nd July 2004 18:40

any Brand PSU will do fine in my humble opinion, the one you can get cheapest at your local shop!

How did the shrimps turn out? Tasty??
Don't forget to reward the Chef with good and cold beer.

70°C = not burning temp , but I'd like to see you put your finger on a "hot plate" like that ;)
