Can anyone explain to me what use underclocking has?

Someone told me about underclocking the other day and I had no idea such a thing existed. Does it actually have a use?

It extends battery life, lowers heat, and also saves on the electric bill.

ps. lower heat = less noise ;) . Underclocked hardware also lasts longer, but you'll probably never notice the difference.

that's not true "per se", it's true that overclocked and overvolted CPUs can have decreased life.
