As almighty JMKe has almost finished his review of this card, he inquired me if I was interested in testing this card under more extreme cooling.

Yes.

From the looks of it, I'll have to look at those two chips.

Datasheet links attached to post.

Unconfirmed voltage modifications; will test them asap.

Massman 4th November 2009 16:27

Without modifications max clocks are:

CORE: 675MHz
Shader: 1450MHz (1500 if mem <900MHz)
MEMORY: 940MHz

01-Nature: 220-ish, without tweaks.

Massman 4th November 2009 17:14

Vmods are confirmed. Now running 1.2V Vgpu and 1.8V Vmem.

CORE: 750MHz (800MHz instant freeze)
Shader: 1600MHz (makes NO difference whatsoever in performance)
MEMORY: 975MHz (1GHz runs, but artifacts)
TEMP: < 70°C (still stock cooling)
01-N: 232FPS (most important clock = memory)

Gonna try more voltage :)

Massman 4th November 2009 17:26

1.35V is a bit too much for this tiny cooler; 1.20V to 1.25V should be doable.

As for memory: doesn't scale past 1.8V that much. 1GHz seems to be the max on air cooling.

u have the zalman cooler on the 9600GT from galaxy try that one on it, it should fit.
just dont lose any mounting bits!

Massman 4th November 2009 19:29

The Galaxy one is awesome (although it's kind of too big - I'll post pics later).

Same voltage as before:

Core (linked) 750 to 800
Mem 955 to 1000
Temp: 80 to 45

u mean the zalman :p?

Massman 4th November 2009 20:36

Yes :p

geoffrey 4th November 2009 21:14

I believe you still have that more then average good 8400GS too, correct? maybe you should give that one a go too ;)

jmke 4th November 2009 23:23

stock clocks are 600, so quite a nice increase :)

Massman 5th November 2009 09:59

Too bad it just doesn't matter at all. Memory frequency is really important on these kinds of cards :-/

jmke 5th November 2009 16:16

will extra cooling pay off?

Massman 5th November 2009 16:27

It does a bit. With the Zalman cooler I can go upto 780/960 stable. With LN2 (cold across the PCB) maybe a tad higher?

jmke 5th November 2009 16:40

worth the effort you think? what platform do you have to combine it with?
Core i7 is used at HWBot in the GT 220 category

Massman 5th November 2009 16:46

Currently using my Core i5 setup to test. I guess 4.2G will be enough to max the GPU. With these kinds of low-end cards all tests are GPU-bound anyhow.

It's always worth the trouble. If it doesn't scale, we at least know it doesn't scale ;).

jmke 5th November 2009 16:47

coolio:)
I've featured your OC results without mods in the review here: http://www.madshrimps.be/gotoartik.php?articID=963
if you provide a few pics of the test setup and OC results, I'll stump together the "Extreme GT 220 OC" piece:)

Massman 5th November 2009 16:49

Oki, working on it :)

Massman 6th November 2009 10:32

The advantage of the Zalman cooler is that it also cools the memory actively. So, I can increase voltage and run 970MHz through 3Dmark03 :)

Go go go :)

jmke 6th November 2009 20:28

interesting mounting :)

Massman 6th November 2009 22:53

Why interesting?

Card has been insulated completely, just checked if it still boots - and it did - LN2 will be for tomorrow.

jmke 7th November 2009 07:50

because it is an interesting approach for multvideocard compatibility :)

huh?

jmke 9th November 2009 15:00

uh... I get 188 FPS with MUCH slower system

Massman 9th November 2009 15:02

Will explain later

jmke 9th November 2009 15:03

GPUtemp flipping out at 230°C;)

Massman 9th November 2009 15:19

No.

As I mentioned before, the memory chips have have operating temperature of 0°C to 85°C. Outside this range, the memory chips are not guaranteed to work and that's exactly what happens. I can go to around -35°C without having the memory chips go nuts, but below that performance drops significantly. I've tried to keep the memory chips warm, but there are two really close to the LN2 container and I can keep those above 0°C.

I will have to go through the datasheet again hoping to find a description of what happens during this freakout. My best guess would be that they operate at a very low frequency as I still have perfectly good 3D scenes.

The memory goes completely bezerk below -100°C. At that temperature, I even have artifacts in 2D desktop.

Massman 9th November 2009 16:06

Some extra notes I made:

- Beyond 1.5V there's barely any scaling; with this card (core), it is in fact all about the temperature as displayed in underneath scaling table:

1000MHz at -40°C
1100MHz at -60°C
1200MHz at -80°C
1300MHz at -100°C (stable for a dozen of seconds - mem temp issue)

skulstation 9th November 2009 16:14

nice.keep pushing

Massman 9th November 2009 16:33

Only Vantage to go. Scores at this moment:

2K1 - 60k
2K3 - 27k
2K5 - 17989
2K6 - 9.7k
AM3 - 235k

blind_ripper 9th November 2009 18:14

MM u should post pics off the use from the NB container on xs for vince ;).

that's the least u could do i think!

leeghoofd 9th November 2009 18:29

Gold cup galore !! would it scale better with an I7 for 05/06 and Vantage and/or E8600 on 01 ? Or is it purely GPU limited ?

It's VGA memory limited

jmke 10th November 2009 21:07

would it be feasible to swap out the ram chips with higher rated ones?

Massman 10th November 2009 21:21

Technically - yes, in practice - hardly.

leeghoofd 10th November 2009 22:27

do all the vendors use the same rams ? Gainward might do a GLH edition or sortlike... maybe eVGA too with some FTW edition :p I see ram differences in stock speed with the 512 MB version ( 900mhz ram speed vs mostly around 800 for the 1gb versions) I see DDR2 and 3 versions....
