Geforce 6800 GT, worth overclocking at this moment?

I'm playing games etc on my new PC system:

AMD 64 3000+ (90nm) | Geforce 6800 GT PCI-E | ASUS A8N-SLi Deluxe | NEC 3500A | Antec Sonata | 2* 512 DDR ram Patriot TCCD chip | Logitech MX-510 | Iiyama 19" CRT 904 MMUT | Maxtor 160 GIG S-ATA

I'll definitely overclock my CPU when a decent bios is available for the ASUS A8N-SLi Deluxe.. though, I could overclock my GPU at any moment I want.

The Geforce 6800 GT is at this moment a high-end grapica card.. It can run games like FarCry, Half-LifeČ, Doom 3 without any problems (=with the highest settings & more than 60 frames per second) ..... though in the "near"-future, this card will get trouble playing games with the highest settings + 60 frames per second or more... at that very moment it's nice to overclock your grapical card to a Geforce 6800 Ultra or higher if you have luck. (you'll see a noticable graphical boost)

I'm just wondering.. does it really matter when I overclock my GPU? If I overclock my GT to an ULTRA or more in this period.. I'll probably won't see a graphical improvment? [so it won't matter if I overclock my GPU atm?]

(someone I know wrote this:

your grapical card won't last for 10 years if you overclock the memory of your GPU without any extra cooling.)

bullshit?

(P.S: I've got a leadtek Geforce 6800 GT: http://www.tones.be/productimg/winfa...bdd658c961.jpg

I heard from people it has a pretty good cooler? ^^)

youre going to run you vidcard 10 years?

its like a dunno what card and a 6800gt.(was there a 3dcard 10 years ago, more a "grafic"card?)

and oc'ing is sure a benefit, your games will run faster when you oc it.
you will not notice if you oc 1mhz but after 10 mhz there w'll be more fps.

rivatuner is a good programs for this, just look for some guides ;)

G33MD00D 4th January 2005 03:36

duh I wont' use that grapical card for 10 years, maximum 3 years.. it's just, I don't like to see it happen that my graka dies in 2 years because I oc'ed it. (though, I'll have a new card after 2 years)

that's why I created this topic, to be sure. ;)

PS: I know Rivatuner, already have it on my pc.

If you overclock now, you can even use higher quality setting (6x AA, 8AF etc...).

kristos 4th January 2005 09:57

in my humble opinion, only if you start raising the voltage will you be in danger of reducing the lifespan of your card.

the difference in lifespan when you just overclock without raising the voltage is neglectible.

G33MD00D 4th January 2005 16:53

hmm, ok than, I'll probably start overclocking tomorrow.

what should I do best? Raise my core speed & mem speed to ULTRA settings (1100 & 400) so I can see if my graka can work without artifacts etc

than flash my GT to a ULTRA bios? (or isn't it recommended to flash my GT to an ULTRA)

kristos 4th January 2005 17:22

no, tighter timings on the 6800GT I believe therefor your 6800GT @ ultra speeds will outperform a genuine 6800 ultra

G33MD00D 4th January 2005 17:45

ok, no flashing then. ^^

just a last simple question about oc'n my GT atm or later:

Will I see a noticable difference in graphics (frames, ...) in the games that are available at this very moment? (HLČ, FarCry,...)

jmke 4th January 2005 18:16

only noticable through benchmarks in my humble opinion

yeh? :s

G33MD00D 5th January 2005 19:09

anyway, if it's true what jmke said:

"only noticable through benchmarks in my humble opinion"

than I'll wait untul I'll really see a difference..

jmke 5th January 2005 19:30

if you had replied something else then "yeh?" I might have understood that you needed confirmation on that :p

yes it IS true, difference between GT <> Ultra is not very big, not noticable in games unless you run 1600x1200 4x FSAA 8x AS

in counter-strike source anti aliasing is 8x (max) & antiscop 16x (max.) don't know of the others, should test HLČ SP.. have nothing other than HLČ atm.

(I run in both desktop & games 1280 by 1024) worth oc'n it ATM to an ultra or could I just wait longer without seeing any difference?

k thx, I'll wait until the difference is noticable than. :)

someone else who agrees or disagrees?

Sidney 6th January 2005 03:34

Who can disagree.;)

Overclock now or later doesn't mean any difference if the outer limit is what you are getting after. Like we all need 3GHz AMD S939 to making a living or couldn't do our job without.:)

So, I'd say go for it and let us know how far you get.:cheer:

jmke 6th January 2005 07:58

if you have a vanilla 6800, and you get it up to GT/Ultra speeds, then I agree with you Lazyman;

but in case of the 6800GT, increases might not be seen today; but a year from now it will be; it does matter. let me explain.

if you run Doom3 now at 1280x1024 you will get 70+ on either GT or Ultra. overclocking your GT to Ultra or higher speeds will not be noticable in-game because whether you have 70fps or 77fps your eyes and mind wont register this.

however 1 year from now Raven releases a game based on the Doom3 engine and added tons of complex level design and cool special effects, your frame rate drops to 30fps with the GT, the Ultra gets 35fps; if you now overclock that GT to Ultra speeds, you WILL notice that 5fps in-game.

:)

G33MD00D 6th January 2005 13:27

yeh I know that framerate story, you can't see the difference above 60 FPS.

though, is the difference between a GT and an ultra only frames?

nevermind :) I'll just overclock when I feel my graka needs to be oc'ed. ^^

jerr 7th January 2005 15:33

where did you buy your card ?
ive been searching for a 6800gt PCI for ages :/

jmke 7th January 2005 15:45

I'm guessing www.tones.be ? :)

jerr 7th January 2005 16:25

nop tones only have AGP version

G33MD00D 10th January 2005 21:30

I'm "Gamedude" from games.telenet.be , I imported it from www.overclockers.co.uk somewhere in december (bought it for 450€)
