This is fun: overclock your monitor

Step 1: download & install powerstrip
Step 2: open pstrip, choose "display properties" & configure.
Step 3: choose "advanced timing options"
Step 4: raise RAMDAC pixel frequency & watch the current Hz of your monitor rise.

When your monitor fails (blank screen/explodes in your face), reboot en set it to a few hertz lower.

I went from 75Hz to 90.2Hz at 1280*1024. A very noticable difference. :)

How far can you go?*

* This will most likely damage your HW. I take no responsebility.

hihi @ Bosw8er's comment =)

watch out with those settings RB, you want a 21"CRT exploding in your face? ;)

I like living on the edge. ;)

Spoiler: my CRT is certified up to 90Hz at 1280*1024, but windows only lets me go up to 75. :( I think i overclocked my ramdac beyond spec, but not CRT.

jmke 27th May 2003 23:18

now that you mention it, if you want to overclock the monitor you need to use a vidcard capable of surpassing the monitors specs =)
the way you're doing it you will end up with yet another dead HW item =)

maybe actively cool the RAMDAC :^D

RichBa5tard 27th May 2003 23:39

Ramdac is capable of 350mhz. It's just windows who hates me.

Not to criticize your theory, nor be redundant, but I do want to say this is a very dangerous area to "overclock."

I also want to add, I really have a lot of respect for the authors of Powerstrip for giving away as Freeware, a program I'd pay for. I find it to be the most effective vidocard tweaker, especially due to it's "deep" register process. It's one of the few programs which actually makes changes to the memory settings in the videocard's BIOS! I posted a thread once over at Xtremesys, where I asked if anyone had compared which videocard software resulted in higher overall benchmark scores, and/or visually noticable differences? I personally compared Powerstrip to Winfox Utility, Coolbit's, NVHard Page, Geforce tweak Utility, Rage3D, Radeonator, RivaTuner, among other, and found Powerstrip overclocked as high as 50MHz, and 1000pt 3DMark2001SE increases.

My monitor does 1024*768@100hz, but my current videocart can do this only @85hz. Could I solve this problem with powerstrip?

yeah but I wouldn't do that if I were you, you've already trashed enough hardware this year.

Another tip I wanted to mention is if you open the Powerstrip menu from PS taskbar icon (rightclick). Then scroll up to Options and finally Adapter Info. you'll find a world on "deep" tweaking options for your videocard including changing the Latency!

I don't know of another tweaking program which offers features as indepth as this.
