6200 to 6600(GT) softmodding/OCing

Thinking of buying a new vidcard, though, it should cost to much. I was first thinking of buying a 6600GT card, but now I read almost all 6200 can be softmodded/OCed to a 6600(GT)!

Would be great ofcourse, since those cards cost half as much!

You guys think I make a fair chance of transfering this card?
MSI NX6200AX-TD128 AGP Geforce 6200 128Mb DDR

It would cost me about €65 <> €150 for a 6600GT :)

Which cards have bigger chances of being softmoddable to 6600(GT):
- normal 6200
- 6200 with TurboCache
?

Sidney 11th September 2005 06:12

Don't even think of touching the TurboCache 6200, it sucks. I'm very satisifed with my Normal 6200.:)

Does 19,000 3Dmark01; ~7000 3Dmark03; 3,000 3Dmark05 and about 68 FPS Doom3 @medium. Although 6600GT in the U.S. can now be had for ~$145 while the 6200 is <$80.

BlackRabbit 11th September 2005 06:16

So you were able to unlock the 4 extra pipelines?
(with Rivatuner?)

jmke 11th September 2005 10:46

are we talking PCIe or AGP cards here? there IS a difference in OC potential..

BlackRabbit 12th September 2005 01:21

Prolly AGP, as I don't want to spend money on PCIe hardware YET (mobo, cpu,...)

Sidney 12th September 2005 01:32

For AGP, buy a 2nd hand 9800Pro, like I did :) and update BIOS to 9800XT if it is R360 core.

BlackRabbit 12th September 2005 04:08

Is the performance difference that big?

A 9800Pro 2nd hand still costs more here than a new 6200.
A 6200 is standard passive cooled => quiet.

How about power usage? Can I suppose a 6200 uses (much) less power? (numbers?)

Not to forget I can get a 6200 pronto, while finding a 9800 at a decent price may take some time...

And most important: didn't have much luck the last times I bought second hand vidcards :(

I think my mind is pretty much made up, but if I'm wrong, please correct me!

Sidney 12th September 2005 06:30

Never buy from gamers:)
Dell, HP OEM cards are normally good to very good. I can't say much about the AGP version 6200, I don't know.

Never buy in a hurry :)

Véry true :)

Sharpside 13th September 2005 12:14

Get a 6800le, if your lucky you can unlock the pipelines to 16/6.

BlackRabbit 14th September 2005 08:51

How does it perform next to 6800gt? (normal and unlocked?)
And next to 6200?

Tried to find some test, but couldn't find any.. (and really have to go to bed now, tomorrow I have to get up early again :/)

Thanks in advance!

jmke 14th September 2005 09:17

6200 < 6600 < 6600GT = 6800LE < 6800 < 6800GT

Sharpside 14th September 2005 15:05

@ 16/6 mine scores +- 11k in 3dmark03.
Standard its equal to a 6600gt but has better overclocking potentional.
With the pipes unlocked, you have good chances to overclock your gpu to gt speeds.
The memory on the Le is DDR and on the GT DDR 3.

My ram does 900mhz and gt has a stock 1000mhz on the ram.
So in short you can convert an le to a gt with slower ram if your lucky.

If your thinking of buying a 6600GT your better of with a 6800le.
If you want to spend more but not as much as a 6800gt costs you can opt for the GE edition from asus.

Sidney 14th September 2005 16:20

6800XT is coming out :)

hjomby 16th September 2005 15:04

I have a Gigabyte GV-NX66256D GeForce 6600 PCI Express card. I installed RivaTuner and was able to take a look at the locked components but I was unable to unlock anything. Is it possible to unlock the pipelines on this card? If so, is there something I missed?

jmke 16th September 2005 15:14

6600 can not be unlocked

6200 can be
6800 can be

Sidney 16th September 2005 15:16

6600 is already set to 8 pipelines as in 6600GT which uses DDR3 ram instead of DDR2. While 6200 has 4 pipelines at default and can be unlocked to 8. Pricing on 6600 is now less than $100 while 6200 has dropped to $80, 6200 card is no longer the value buy.

Correct me if I'm off the mark.

hjomby 16th September 2005 15:27

It is really fast at this point. For a midrange card, it was worth the money. Great performance. There is no lag at all in Far Cry or Deus Ex - IW.

Sidney 16th September 2005 15:58

For occasional gamer like me, the 6200 now running as 6600GT (a bit behind on real GT) and slightly faster than 9800 Pro (mine is not very good in overclocking), I am very satisified with Doom3, BF2 and HL2 performance. ;)

As Sharpside indicated; the 6800LE could be a good purchase at about $125 (newegg price).:D

"LAG" relates to network/internet delay and has nothing to do with your videocard :)

if you mean that the FPS is sufficiently high to play both games, I'm sure you are correct, if you are willing to play those games at lower resolution and with the detail turned down.

to run FarCry at 1024x768 and High Detail , you'll need NV6800GT power (or more)

hjomby 16th September 2005 17:42

Yes, I was referring to FPS. I play at 1024 X 768 res - very high detail on both games. It looks awesome and there is no delay even in a firefight when getting attacked by the mutants in FC. No need for a 6800GT. My other machine with an FX5700LE can't be set higher than 800 x 600 but I think that's because it's an AGP card with a S478 CPU. The PCI Express video and LGA775 CPU make a world of difference.

jmke 16th September 2005 17:45

at ~40FPS in FarCry I don't call it incredibly fluent:)
http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=get...&articID=2 84

60+ is more enjoyable, nevertheless, 40FPS in a recent game like that in HQ with a cheaper vidcard is nice!

hjomby 16th September 2005 17:58

hjomby 16th September 2005 19:19

Well, I'm sure there is a big difference but $300 for a new card is out of my league. It's good enough for me.

BlackRabbit 16th September 2005 19:31

One last question: how does a 4200 perform next to a 6200? (both standard settings)

Can't really find comparisons between these 2...

Sidney 16th September 2005 19:35

Don't know about the 4200. At default my 6200 PCIe is cranking out ~12,000 3Dmark01 SE, and ~18,000 when overclocked.
