waterchiller 2.0

Hey guys, just finished first tests with my waterchiller 2.0.

My imagination painted in paint:

The fridges:

Again, only the cooling parts now:

Close-up from 1st compresser:

And the 2nd one:

Some parts to make it mobile:

Wheels mounted:

Maze 4 s939 with copper block mounted under it to read temps:

Beckett G35 pump with Armaflex around it to make it more silent:

Chillers mounted:

Installed insulation around reservoir and added big 12V carfan:

Frontview:

Inside the reservoir after 24u: ICE

And basetemp of the cpu-block @ -1°C:

Roomtemp: 25°C
First I was hoping to hit -10°C, but I forgot my water was not tweaked at all.
Further I forgot to add insulation under the reservoir so I got a lot of condens on the wood.

Test with AMD Atlon XP 1700+ 1,46GHz and D-Tek Whitewhater

Moederbord and CPU insulated with plasticspray:

Cpu block installed with Armaflex and grease around socket area:

Chiller chilling cpu, first boot:

Close-up from mobo:

Again 24u chilling, now without pump on.
As you can see water is not tweaked at all. It almost has same freezepoint as normal water. My pt1000 was freezed in and it was reading -3°C.

Started overclocking: highest I got was 1M SuperPi @ 2.5GHz:

Not so good. On air it was allready doing 2,3GHz à 2,4GHz. This chip, wich is an DLT3C JUIHB, can do a lot better then this.
I was able to boot into windows @ 2.53GHz, and then do the super-pi, but if I tried 2,6GHz with 8rdavcore the pc just freezed and I needed to reboot. Also I have not much luck with bord. I can't put mod bios on it because of bios glitches, so I'm at bios 19 right now. It can only go up to fsb 215 :(
Also I forgot to bring my 1Gb pc 3200 2-2-2-5 (TCCD chips) with my so I was stuck on Infineons PC 3200 3-3-3-8. I have only one module, so no dual channel. Stick did 2,5-2-2-6 on 180MHz.

Cooling wasn't good either. Aldo my watertemps were around 0°C, my core was 15°C, and sometimes when I rebooted it suddenly was 28°C. Don't know why, next reboot everything was back normal. Maybe bad contact, or maybe some dirt inside the block because my pump used to be very dirty. Dunno, and I don't have material to open the block at this moment. When I first booted I also had coretemp of almost 50°C. Checked the whitewater and it was getting warm also. Then I rememberd reservoir had a lot of ice in it, and water inside my tubings was also frost. I was not getting any water true the block.
I solved it rather quick but always nice to see 50°C core on a chiller :D

After all this was a fun thing to do. All hardware survived, insulation was better then I thought. I was able to get this thing running for 2 ours, then I got bored.

Maybe some more test, dunno yet.
But there will be watetchiller 3.0, that's for shure ;)

nice setup, keep up the good work !!

Sharpside 10th September 2005 13:20

How about combining it with a peltier?

Sidney 10th September 2005 16:24

Good setup; likely be the processor or board holding you back.

prolly mobo, but the NF7-S (I think its that 1) overclocks awsome when you do some mods on it. And offcourse you need the right bios. I use merlin D25 on mine

Sidney 10th September 2005 18:02

I've tried all of them inclusive of Merlin .... no bottom line benefit.

If your board doesn't want to go higher it cant, but sometimes your mobo can handle 250fsb and your bios only 220, and then you better take a new bios.

With merlin D25 I managed to hit 272fsb, no other bios I tested was able to go above 250

Well, I could do that. I have an 240W laying around here but still have to make a supply. And I have an s939 Maze 4 also, wich is compatible with socket A, but I have to get me a cold plate first.
So, I could do some updates in near future...

UPDATE

I had some time left last weekend to play around little more, so little updater here.

Removed whitewhater again, ready to add an TEC. In meanwhile I took a pic of insulation:

Polished CPU block and 'cold side':

Another view on the 'cold side'... I know... but I didn't had anything else to use and shop was allready closed :(

The 240W TEC 15Vmax 26A:

TEC @ 5V cooled by Alpha Pal heatsink and 80mm fan:

Going back to my chiller I had this strange purple ice forming:

Whitewhater, TEC and cold side installed:

TEC @ 12V, reservoir @ -2°C, no load:

Booting...stupid BIOS... In windows I got CPU temp like 5°C idle, stressed 10°C:

I got to 2,8GHz, and near 2,7GHz superpi 1M stable.
I got shot of 39s superpi dual channel but lost my memory stick :bash:

So this was it for today. Again not very good functioning, but I'm thinking of finally trying some DICE. First save some money (been partying to much last months...).

your coldplate is WAY to thick, take some 5mm;)
