Ultimate Fan guide

If anyone dares to ask which fan they're supposed to use with their HS, or which casecooling they should use, feel free to throw this in their face. :)

jmke 3rd June 2002 23:58

w00p , nice work matey
shouldn't you be with your nose in the books.. you got finals! ;)

jASjE 4th June 2002 12:33

nice :ws:
check your mailto: links though, 2 errors I found at first sight:

"Replace the standard fan with an papst NGL (12dBa !). Unhearable and cools the unit just enough. I haven't tried this on +350Watt PSU's, it could be it's unefficient cooling for a 500W power supply. Please let me know if you have experience with this."

the let me know has an error in the link

also in the end, the
"If you have any comments on this, feel free to email me. "
has an error

I'm learning a lot on this forum!!!!!!:D :D :D

DL33T 4th June 2002 23:14

AWESOME guide!
I always had a good feeling about the Papst fans :D

DUR0N 5th June 2002 16:15

shame that you didn't tested the vantec fans. Heard good things about them...and the ad's say it is 'silent' ( )

Falco 23rd June 2002 10:14

RichBa5tard 23rd June 2002 10:25

I ordered them @ tones.be, but they seem out of stock now.

Just mail them and ask when they're expected back in stock.

Falco 23rd June 2002 10:34

ok, that's what I gonna do.

Your wright when you say that the original Volcano 7 FAN's suck, lot's of noise & less cooling, XP1800+ ==>> +50°

But Is'nt it weerd that the papst @ 3000rpm is a beter cooler than the Volcano Fan @ 5000rpm?

RichBa5tard 23rd June 2002 10:49

Iets veerie weerd indied :p

Actually, the standard v7 fan never reaches 5000 rpm under normal conditions: you've got to hold a flame under the temp probe to reach that speed. :)

an interesting add-in to this thread

HugoBoss 8th January 2003 22:43

Mvg

Why thank you, kind sir. :D

hmm... the article clearly states an "OC" choice and a "non OC" choice.

There's no such thing as a free lunch: you can't expect silent aircooling gives you really low temps, but the choice i mentioned in the article will keep your cpu cool enough to be stable at stock speed (<60°C).

Not necessarely. It will improve your temps, but it's generally not necessary if you're not into overclocking.

If your CPU temp hoovers around 60~65°C stressed (a little bit too high), and you don't want to spend extra cash on a (louder?) cpu cooler, it might be a good idea to round your cables or install a (extra) casefan.

Watercooling is expensive. If you're not into overclocking, you can make your pc (almost) as quiet as with watercooler, but for half the price.

General rule: don't save money on cheap heatsinks and loud fans. Get a decent, copper cooler which can handle a silent 80mm (or larger) fan instead of a crappy aluminium heatsink with a loud but performant 60mm fan.

Vidcards make a lot of noise too. Replace it with a Zalman HP-50 passive heatsink (will fit on GF1 DDR).

HD: go for the Seagate Cuda IV/V or Diamond Max Plus 9 (both fluid bearing), the idle spinning noise from a ball bearing disk is a high pitched sound which is VERY annoying.

Yes. There is only one way to know what you are talking about: and that's experiencing it yourself. Every cooler/fan mentioned in the article has passed my hands and has been approved, except the Zalman HP80 (larger brother of the HP50). I've spend A LOT of money in buying all this stuff, but the knowledge gained is worth it. :)

I'm a student myself (also toegepaste informatica :D ), yes. My article clearly states a low end (cheap) and high end (expensive) solution. While some articles are far more expensive than other (eg. Volcano 7 = 20 eur, Alpha 8045 = 60 eur), they are all worth its price.

-edit-
Places where these heatsinks can be bought can be found under "sponsors" on main page. :D

subtle :)

first of all -- great job again RichB :super:

now let's do the same thing for watercooling gear ... if we could only get DangerDen, Innovatek, Swiftech and aqua-computer to support this research, it would be a damn unicum

@ HugoBoss : i presume you're attending classes at KdG ?
if you ever have any problems installing some new things or something alike, just give a yell ... Antwerp is a fine location ;)

I wrote Dangerden a while ago, they seemed to be willing to donate some "review samples".

Only one thing stopping: changing watercooling components is not that fun if you have to dismantle everyting... and we don't have a testlab (yet ;) ).

Calantak: please buy us a HeadQuarter, would you? :D

Speaking of calantak, it has been a while since i've seen him. Busy with work i asume?

-edit-

Oh well, i'm feeling like writing a guide. Starting at "the ultimate WaterCooling" guide as we speak. :D

Thank you very much for the answers RichBa5tard :feesten: :feesten:

@Ter·Angreal· : I am indeed following classes at KdG, hihi
