Thermalright SP-94 Copper Heatpipe Heatsink

Liquid3D and I take an extensive look at Thermalright latest and possibly greatest P4 heatsink!

Quote:

Thermalright has certainly kept their eye on the ball lately, and they´ve scored yet again with their latest offering, the SP-94. This marks Thermalright´s ingress into heat-pipe technology, and they've made a distinguished entrance. The SP94 is an all copper thin-fin cooler, the embodiment of which centres around their SLK series. From what your about to see, Thermalright has truly raised heat-sink manufacture, to an art form.
We compare it to the SLK-947U and SLK-900U in this article.

Wow, great stuff!

It's very impressive that it beats the SLK900 by approx 2 degrees, but the SLK900U has the advantage of being both AMD & Intel cooler.

Is the SP94 being sold in belgium yet?

jmke 5th October 2003 16:27

Haven't seen it in Belgium yet, but the price will approx. be around this one I think

I will put the SP-94 further to test the coming days by upping the vcore and see how much I can overclock my poor little 2.4 :)

Unregistered 7th October 2003 11:39

are the temps in the review socket or diode temps???

jmke 7th October 2003 11:43

the P4 has an onboard temp diode which we used for the measurements, it portrays the exact cpu temperature more correctly.

Unregistered 9th October 2003 19:53

ooops! ... why does the heatsink have such a rough surface?

Look at that surface! :puke:
You can clearly see the machine marks in the scanner image, yet
the reviewer has praise for how "smooth" it is. ... huh?! :wtf:

Hasn't the reveiwer seen a really smooth contact surface? :wtf:

jmke 9th October 2003 19:58

the scanner image surpasses that of most digicams, and even if I would scan a "smooth" / "lapped" heatsink, you will see the same marks
at 1600DPI things become pretty big , and the smallest groove can be seen as if it were huge

here are the L1 bridges of an AXP @ 1600DPI

swiftech?

this review would be perfect if was set against the Swiftech MCX462-V, i mean dont we all wanna know who's the better one atm? :]

jmke 11th October 2003 11:17

it would be impossible to compare it to the Swiftech MCX462-V... as it is a Socket A heatsink :*

the Intel version will be released very soon.

Unregistered 11th October 2003 15:41

woops minor detail i hadn't noticed :] looking forward to the review tho ;]

jmke 11th October 2003 17:15

we will try to do what is possible, as it is very hard to get our hands on Swiftech products here in Europe (tried France/Netherlands/Germany/Belgium to no avail), hoping for some good news from Swiftech directly soon :)

[-Ampora-] 15th October 2003 11:46

do you think its an impressive heatsink? i dont

its not like it blow's you away cause of his cooling..

the slight diff with the 900 is kinda weak.

why i still think that the 900u is better, cause it can be used for P4 & AMD, what is a good thing, cause most ppl cant say they will buy 101% sure again an amd or P4 [you never know what offer you will get :) ]

c wut i mean?

jmke 15th October 2003 11:48

the cooling capacity of the SP-94 increases when used with higher Wattage.

Meaning that a P4 @ 3.6ghz with 1.6v will have a BIG difference with the SLK900.

the heatpipes cause this positive effect, this heatsink also has the SLK900 beat for easiness of installation!

[-Ampora-] 15th October 2003 11:52

that's just i minor thing the installation (imo)

ok, @ high oc it performs good (very good)
that means its more an OC heatsink then a standard user heatsink, but how many ppl know that? even after reading some review's.
in my humble opinion =>
hard oc'er => sp 94
all other pc ppl => slk900u

jmke 15th October 2003 12:04

I still have to test this more profoundly before I can assure that the following statement is true: but at very low fanspeed, the SP-94 is also a better performer, the heatpipes can cool down the CPU in a small case where not a lot of airflow is possible.

But like I said, more test need to be done before I can be 100% sure. I'll be back with numbers & details in due time!

[-Ampora-] 15th October 2003 12:30

:super: ok :)

ModdiN MansoN 16th October 2003 18:50

has somebody spotted them in a Belgian shop yet ???

Bored 26th October 2003 19:48

I've got a Swiftech MCX 4000 here, with papst 4412FM @7 volt.
Now I've got some questions for you guys:
- Is it worth upgrading to an SP94 (is it worth the extra €59)
- Can I fit my 120mm fan on the HS?
- Will it fit on my P4C800-E Deluxe mobo?
- Does the possibility exists that i can overclock my PIV 3.0Ghz even more than 3.5Ghz (stable speed at the moment)

Lots of thanks in advance.

The Senile Doctor 26th October 2003 20:01

where did you get that p4c900?
I've been looking all around for that board :^D

Bored 26th October 2003 20:05

Ow, sorry, typo ;)
Correcting rigt away ...

Now, can we get back on topic please ;) ?

jmke 27th October 2003 07:16

it you are looking for the EXTREME performance... yes
otherwise = nope

Unregistered 23rd November 2003 23:30

Have you done any comparisons with other heatpipe heatsinks? Like the coolermaster and such? Would be interesting to get a value comparions (price/performance)

jmke 24th November 2003 07:31

Coolermaster's HHC-001 Heatpipe heatsink is on par with a Swiftech MCXC370
http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...id=1128&page=5

a little better then a Volcano 7+
http://www.3dxtreme.org/coolermasterheatpipe2.shtml

and afaik this Coolermaster seems to be for AMD only :/

Avalon 25th November 2003 14:39

sp94 and as5 will be available @ tones this week

piotke 25th November 2003 14:46

avalon, you work at tones ?

Bored 25th November 2003 15:49

Talking about AS5.
What TIM will perform best?
-AS5
-CoolerMaster premium (shinetsu)
-ShinEtsu by G51(or whatever the number is, allways forget it)
-Nanotherm PCM+

jmke 25th November 2003 17:14

got AS5/Ceramique/Coolermaster Premium/AS3/AS-alumina up for testing here, if anybody can get me some PCM+ I'd be happy to include it in the roundup :)

Trip 2nd December 2003 15:53

I enjoyed reading your review and was wondering if you could clarify something for me.

In your article you wrote that:

"As a last test I set the CPU to 2.4Ghz, removed the CPU fan and let the system run like this.. for more than 1 hour! The CPU temperature was only 53°C."

Is this in idle or while running Hot CPU tester Pro?

jmke 2nd December 2003 17:06

at idle, at load it reached these temps in a much shorter time period :)

Trip 2nd December 2003 18:00

Dag, well I should have known it was too good to be true.

heh, I commented on your results at www.silentpcreview.com and they said it was idle as well.

Still looks like an amazing heatsink, great review by the way!

jmke 2nd December 2003 18:02

Thanks for the :super: comment!

placing a silent 120mm somewhere near to heatsink that blows cool air onto will make it very good performing though :)

Trip 2nd December 2003 18:20

I liked your idea of using it in a desktop case; I have a coolermaster atc-600-VX1 and was thinking of upgrading to a 2.4C. The airflow is not as good as in a tower, but it's a lot better than most other desktops.

120mm would do it, what's a good quiet 120mm?

jmke 2nd December 2003 18:27

can't answer that one, I'm used to 120mm delta's :)

Da_BoKa 2nd December 2003 21:13

a delta on a rheo kit: the power off delta and the silent off papst

papst are quite expensive but silent, or get an cheap enermax and use the potmeter ( same as rheokit )

Unregistered 3rd December 2003 07:33

yeah prob. papst or panaflo are the best. I use Papst 80mm with a zalman fan mate and heh, ADDA 60mm case fans that are suprisingly quiet.

Throw one of those 80mm or a 92mm on the sp-94 and you'll cool in peace.

Trip 3rd December 2003 07:34

whoops, "unregistered" is "Trip"
