Graphic Card Cooler roundup

Quote:

With modern graphic cards producing as much heat as a modest desktop processor, 3rd party graphic card coolers have changed from being an exotic piece of aluminium owned by geeks to a necessity for silent/cool computing. We tested 7 popular VGA coolers to see which one would suit your needs best, whether you are searching for silence or extra performance..

great review, is it possible to mention the estimated price of the products?

in the end, for most people it doesn't come down to a performance difference of a few degrees between cooler A and B, it comes down to the ease of installation, pricing and availability

IMO the VGA silencer is the all-around winner: you can get it for under 20€ (under 20$), it's easy to install, it lowers the case temperature (hot air is blown out of the case) while other cards raise the case temperature. and last but not least: with some casecooling it's the best performer out there :o

RichBa5tard 8th March 2004 21:37

I wanted to include price estimate, but the coolers vary too much in price. I've seen the 80C-HP for as low as 20, and as high as 35 euro... maybe i should include a prijswatch.be link?

jmke 8th March 2004 21:39

prijswatch.be and pricegabber.com maybe for our international readers?

Great piece of writing, great pictures, awesome testing, good conclusion.. you are truly the :king:

super review  , and now sell me that arctic silent cooler

Very good review indeed, I just wish you issued it 2 weeks earlier: I won't have bought the Giant 2 !! lol
Seriously, in the beginning of the test you measure the noise level of the Giant2 using either no fan, the opt. fan in 5V and the fan in 12V. But in the rest of the test you never tell wether the fan is spinning at 5 or 12 V... Could you be a bit more precise please next time ??
An indication of wether the passive solutions enter or not in a Shuttle-like mini-PC would have been great too !!

RichBa5tard 9th March 2004 13:16

The Giant 2 does not come with a 5V/12V adapter, so it's only tested at 0/12V, but not 5V.

You're mixing it up with the zalman 80C-HP + opt fan, which comes with a 5V/12V molex split, hence it's tested at 0/5/12V.

It's hard to tell whether the passive coolers will be good enough for mini-PC's. The arctic cooling vga silencer would be great, but you'll need a spare pci slot next to your vga port.

Hi

Just wondering if the Artic Cooling VGA Silencer can be used on the geForce FX 59xx platform?

Great review by the way, keep up the good work!

The Senile Doctor 9th March 2004 15:46

RichyB, is that arctic cooling vga silencer available in .be?

Question : The Hercules 9700 Pro comes with a heatsink on the back of the Gpu. When installing a Zalman 80A-HP this one has to be removed?

Unregistered 13th March 2004 09:08

I`ve got VGA Sillencer on my Gainward GeForce 3 Ti/450 GS PP and he works on 220/550 ... and I can more overclock gpu but it`s ok. VGA Sillencer is great and cheaper than Zalman or Thermaltake.

yes, it does.

Unregistered 13th March 2004 16:18

where can one get some of those blue ramsinks that were on the 9700 pro card? they're a nice touch.

I think it are the stock memsinks

thermaltake sells memory cooling kits, they include such blue heatsinks. they're a bit longer though, so you have to cut them to make them fit

They came with the Titan cooler. I forgot to include the graph with memory temps before / after applying heatsinks. Good thing you mentioned it, i'll fix it asap.

Beautiful review :)

keep up the great work!

luv from Australia

Unregistered 17th March 2004 10:47

Yes, great review. But I think your numbers are a little off. I purchased the zalman 80C-HP with the fan, because of this article. I have it mounted on a 9600 XT and I have found my idle is 35 c and loaded is only 42 c. Could my case cool that much better than your test bed case?

I highly recommend this GPU cooler to anyone that has a side window, it is just too cool looking. And as far as the Giant II, don't waste your time, I replaced one with the Zalman. And the Zalman does a great job at cooling your south bridge too.

Anyone want a Giant II real cheap?

RichBa5tard 17th March 2004 12:26

Thedryker,

I don't know how you measured your gpu temp, but in the review i used a pretty accurate temp probe glued to the edge of the core. I don't think off-die sensors get any more accurate than that. :)

Also, the 9600XT is made on .13u process, instead of .15u, which makes it produce much less heat.

jmke 17th March 2004 12:28

doesn't the 9600XT has an internal temp diode readout?

or does the 9800XT only have that?

TeuS 17th March 2004 12:42

only 9800XT

jmke 17th March 2004 12:46

with standard cooling the 9800XT showed ~80°C under load..

Unregistered 17th March 2004 17:11

The 9600XT does have an internal temp diode. I am getting the temp through the overdrive tab in advanced settings. And maybe it is the smaller process that makes it so much cooler.

Unregistered 22nd March 2004 19:49

Very helpful articles. Was in the process of purchasing a 9800 XT and bought the Arctic Cooler VGA from newegg. Dumb question (I guess)- is it very complicated to install the Arctic Cooler onto the card prior to installation of the card ? I am by no means a hardware expert. Is there a guide for doing this ?

RichBa5tard 22nd March 2004 20:27

It's easier to install than the Zalman 80A/C-HP, but you still have to be carefull.

I took some step by step pictures, hope this helps:

my vote goes to vga silencer
it go me 25Mhz higher (360) (> still going higher ... 370 reached :) not a great OC'er my card) on my r9700 pro than the other (copper stock hercules) cooler
and all of this for €18

Farnsworth 31st March 2004 19:55

Does anybody know where I can find the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer in the region of Leuven?

I can only find a shop in Merchtem and they charge 18€ for the delivery of a 20€ part :(

Does the Thermaltake Gaint II fit on an XFX geforce FX5600 on an ABIT IC-7 Motherboard? I really need help since i want to change my stock fan (it is mulfunctioning) and i am worried of lack of good cooling ....

RichBa5tard 8th June 2004 13:52

Do you have a lowprofile northbridge cooler (old IC7), or a orb-like, taller, northbridge cooler (newer IC7)?

The thermaltake giant ii might come to close to the northbridge cooler. I tested it on a IS7 (same layout as IC7) with the 3cm tall northbridge cooler taken from an asus p4p800, and it didn't fit. If you use a lowprofile nb cooler it would be no problem though.

However, you'd save yourself some trouble if you just use a zalman hp80a/c.

ncc1701e 8th June 2004 16:58

I don't know which exactly is it. It is a rounbd blue heatsink. But i think its a bit more away from the vga slot then that one of the IS7. Which model do you suggest of Zalman? (I have a Geforce FX 5600)

Sorry to insist - but is the hp80a / not hp80c good enough for an FX5600 256Mb with Ram Sinks?

Sorry for being so insistant!

Thanks

RichBa5tard 8th June 2004 23:22

Your FX5600 is going to get real hot if you don't have decent casecooling.

If you have a blowhole near your vidcard, you have nothing to worry about. If you have at least one 80mm intake and 2 80mm outtake fans (PSU + 1), it would be a small risk. if you don't/barely have any casecooling at all, I would't risk it.

ncc1701e 15th June 2004 12:21

Hej guys i'm back! I took your words seriously and ordered a Zalman ZM80C-HP (without fan cos i alread y have two intake fans in front of Gcard) - hope it solved the problem of the chipset fan with the IC7 - now i wait and see :) thanks for your posts m8s
