Athlon Low-end Tbred B Overclocking

Quote:

Want to upgrade your Athlon Thunderbird? Take a look at latest XP1700+ & XP1800+ samples from the AMD farm, sporting a thoroughbred core and lots of overclocking potential. Can the older Abit KR7A tame this CPU ?

fact is that this lowend tbred (costing virtually as much as filling up my car) on an old mobo (2nd hand at 40-50 euro's) and an older cooler (2nd hand at 25-35 euro's) can get ya performance equal to THE PERFORMANCE OF A STANDARD 3000+ barton + nforce2 when the latter is not overclocked...

Just try measuring a 3000+ barton with nforce 2 @ default 166 mhz versus this puppy running 175 mhz fsb @ almost 2200 mhz
(and you would easily make it run at even higher fsb when on this mobo, so 11*165-200 is possible, getting even higher performance)
the difference won't be very big...

total : 150 euro's versus over 1000 euro's...
he who does not overlock is an idiot and a moron...

Gamer 5th March 2003 19:47

amen to that doc.....

DUR0N 5th March 2003 21:06

overclocking is a risk. A risk that not everyone is willin to take (as far as people know how to overclock)

jmke 5th March 2003 21:35

agree with Duron, deciding not to overclock doesn't mean you are an idiot or moron.

I just wanted to show you the possible speed increase you can have , when you want top performance, but don't have the cash for it :)

You forgot to mention the memory to get a good oc corsair xms 3500 is about 130 euro to.

jmke 6th March 2003 12:02

75€ , check "For Sale" forum =)

The Senile Doctor 6th March 2003 12:14

nowp coz you need that on both systems, I was just stating the difference between systems

jmke 6th March 2003 12:37

uhm you can use cheap *** PC3200 DDR and still obtain equal performance if you use an XP3000+ in your rig =)

lazybones 7th March 2003 06:27

sorry, folks my mistake
your wright, you need them in both systems.
sometimes i dont look further than my nose is long.
vrije vertaling :D

:super: pimping =)

Devil's Prophet 7th March 2003 18:10

A typo ? :D

Imo the 2200+ was the first cpu using a tbred-core (A-type), or am mistaking ?

jmke 8th March 2003 01:30

typo? where?

Now AMD is back with a budget minded vengeance! The first "new" Athlon XP with the Thoroughbred core was only for the higher rated models (XP2100+ and up) and although they do deliver good performance at the rated speeds, they overclocked only marginally.
No ?

Looking up ...

/mod: HAAAA, pimped ! =)

pimped ? I don't see no link?
anyway thanks for mentioning it, article has been "fixed" :)

Devil's Prophet 8th March 2003 18:57

You're welcome. :-)

And besides, that article really w0x and I found it very useful lately.

Good job thus. =)

jmke 9th March 2003 00:34

glad you found it usefull, makes me :D

I got confused ,
when the XP2100+ was released it was really hard to get it unlocked (you had to use a dremel on the cpu :/) so it stood out against the XP2000+ in my mind as being different, but not tbred different is seems :)

TorTa 11th March 2003 05:55

So, is the XP 2100+ TBred 'B' unlocked??

jmke 11th March 2003 07:05

afaik yes!

piotke 11th March 2003 07:52

Is it worth searching for a "B-core high end" ?
And what about fsb 200 ?

To be continued, this afternoon ;D.

Hey no school, so I can do something usefull.

jmke 11th March 2003 08:43

AIUHB is quite good, when chilled it gets 3ghz + :)

The Senile Doctor 11th March 2003 08:54

3 ghz +?????
athlon?
or do you mean 3000+

jmke 11th March 2003 09:33

no I mean 3000Mhz athlon :)

The Senile Doctor 11th March 2003 10:48

2100 t'bred B + chilling = >3000mhz athy...

hmmm

how come on the orb the highest athy doesn't go over 2900 mhz...

maybe you can get them to post at 3000 (or more) but they sure as hell don't run anywhere near stable...

jmke 11th March 2003 11:25

never said it was a XP2100+ that obtained these results.

XP2800+ and up, check XS

The Senile Doctor 11th March 2003 13:22

hmm.
how come no-one on the orb hiscores has a 2900 mhz+ athy running any of the two 3dmarks?

quote JCViggen : 'damn thats a sweet chip.... the one which I got to 3006 for a screenshot is the best one I've ever gotten out of 7 or 8, and I can only run 2808 MHz at 1.95V stable, and this is with a stronger prom '

maximum out of 8 chips with enhanced prometeia (that is THE strongest cooling unit on the face of the earth except for LN2)...
stable = 2800 mhz maximum with enhanced prommy...
that says it all...

jmke 11th March 2003 13:52

According to recent posts, most extreme cooling was that guy from Tsjechie.. getting 2800 with a XP1700+ :) so a XP2600+ is bound to do some damage :)

The Senile Doctor 11th March 2003 14:58

but won't go any higher :)
current batch, be it 1700+ or 2400+ or 3000+ are probably all maxing out at 2800 stable if it's a good one...

RuB87 13th March 2003 21:28

I don't understand what you mean here, can you clarify pleace?

2170 is not the maximum of the CPU
175Mhz FSB is not the maximum of either mobo or RAM

RuB87 13th March 2003 21:41

euh zoals ik aan u eerste post in deze tread kan afleiden van wel ...

BTW 2450 krijg ik er ook wel uit indien ik venster opzet en 2.1 vcore neem ma das nie voor all-day use

Don't  me boy! Learn to read before you make these assumptions

Where on this picture of the CPU I used do you see JIUCB ?

thank you , come again =)

RuB87 13th March 2003 21:53

:hello: I was looking @ DURON... mja soit... put ur fsb @ 200 and multiplayer @ 11

jmke 13th March 2003 21:54

please use english as this board & site is internationaly aimed

why should I put fsb @ 200 and multiplier at 11 ?
testing is over
article is done.

don't see what you are getting at RuB87.

RuB87 13th March 2003 21:55

more fsb @ same total speed = more cpu score in sisoft sandra 2k3 ... etc
