Asus Silent Square CPU Cooler Review Asus continues their CPU cooler product series with this high end, 5 heat pipe compact tower cooler, a blue LED fan gives it *bling* and with a rating of up to 130W we find out if it gives you *bang* for the buck. http://www.madshrimps.be/gotoartik.php?articID=502 |
looks like a decent cooling solution. too bad you couldn't test it with an active PSU (which would add some airflow in another direction). |
I choose the current setup for a reason ;) - eliminate as much noise as possible and keep the same setup for all HSF tests. granted, the temp results with the OC'ed CPU in this little "oven" are a lot higher than others are getting, yet, it does give you an idea how the product performs in almost "worse case scenario" where there is little to no airflow and the only main sound source is the CPU cooler fan. I started out with 3 different test setups (see here: http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=384 ) but quickly learned that, if I wanted to be able to publish reviews and do testing in spare time, I had to cut down on the variables. if I can ever make this a full time activity I'm sure to invest more time into testing even more possibilities. The way I see it now, my testing method is above what most review sites are doing. The list of sites which give you noise reading, use different fans on the CPU heatsinks and test them at different speed, and test the CPU at different CPU speeds.. is pretty short. per cooler 2 CPU speeds 2 fans 2 fan speeds = 8 tests, each test approx ~45min. it adds up quickly. and that's without taking pics/installing/removing re-testing, verifications, etc... |
it'd be easier if you'd actually be paid for mucking around with hardware all day, yeah. ;) any idea when this will hit the mainland? also, when i check newegg & consorts, i see it's quite a bit more expensive than stated in the review. |
Doesn't seem that cheap to me compared to the 120mm solutions out there and is not as silent either. Including availability, I would say it is still the Freezer Pro (price/performance) and the Ninia Plus (performance) that take the crown. Can't wait for the Infinity review :) |

i wouldn't buy it for myself, but sometimes people ask me to build them a pc. and in that aspect it could be useful, if it's not too expensive. |
I looked the price up on www.froogle.com and www.froogle.de sorted by price the Silent Square has been on the market for some time now; there is also a Silent Square Pro out there, which has a faster spinning 92mm fan. |
strange, didn't find it at my usual stores (both belgian & german). |
