Asus A8V rev 2.0: Exploring Max HTT Adventure

We welcome our new reviewer & tester JNav89GT to the Madness  , his first piece is on the HTT overclocking capabilities of the Asus A8V v2.0 for the Socket 939 platform for AMD!

"The purpose of this article is to explore the limits of the Hyper transport bus (HTT) on this retail board. The HTT is the speed at which the cpu communicates with the motherboard, while different than a traditional Front Side Bus (FSB) that many of use as a common term, a higher HTT speed will increase overall performance much the same way and is the reason that people have sought to overclock their P3/P4, Athlon, and Athlon XP CPUs by raising their FSB to highest max stable"

Very good article; straight to the point, JNav89GT.:)

Excellent point regarding the value/performance in Ram selection. Keep it coming.:)

If it is possible to see some comparison down the road, something like comparing S-939 to say Intel P4 or Prescott or S-754 in gaming peformance gain.

ty very much! In hindsight, I coulda done alot more w/the article, but hindsights 20/20. My MSI K8N Neo2 article will be much better :)

Thanks, great job. I've got the board coming early next week.

with your vapoLS you will need to get a seperate switch for Powering on board. For some reason, the Asus bios will not startup via the VapoLS chillcontrol. I work around this by just adding a seperate switch. OR, you can do this. Start vapo, once temps under say -20C, hold power to switch system off and then IMMEDIATELY switch on again and everything should power up. I do believe this to be hard on compressor though, so I choose to just have a sepeate switch.
On my prometia, I have not had this issue though.

Calantak has no such issues on his Asus A8V / VapoLS combo http://www.madshrimps.be/forums/show...&threadid=7473 or he hasn't mentioned it yet. but he usually does :)

Anything to do with 110 vs 220 volt?

jmke 20th September 2004 19:13

an issue to report @ Asetek?

JNav89GT 20th September 2004 19:51

yeah I'm not sure what causes it, but it occured when running an Abit AV8 too, and MSI K8N Neo2. My Gigabyte 939 worked fine though. But to be honest, the Asus I ran in the vapo was ver 1.02 so maybe rev2.0 boards work fine in Vapo. It really didn't bother me past initial setup and frustration there, but after workaround figured out, all was golden. I am going back to my Prommy though as I like it better overall. Vapo will be sold off when I get a chance and another Prommy or 2 will be added :)

Hasn't been an issue with the Asus P4c 800e Deluxe. I'll remember to try the off/on after cooldown though. Thanks for the tip.
