Aopen 300Watt PSU - The Modded Version

Piotke takes a flashy AOpen PSU for a spin

Last week I got a call from a friend. His PSU was too loud, so I planned to do something about it.
I went to the local hardware shop, and they pointed me towards an Aopen 300Watt PSU. (FSP300-60PN) Sounds like an ordinary PSU ? Take a look at what I got !

i have an aopen 350watt, maybe i can test it like piotke and post it here, it will be more, how should i say it?

less difference between 300watt and 360 watt

and alsow i have a 9800 vidcard so i can stress it harder

btw is the cpu overclocked at the time of testing?

dlt3c @ 2.0 Ghz @ 1.5 Vcore :)

Da_BoKa 8th December 2003 22:41

owkay, will test it @ 2 ghz but not today, it will be tomorrow and the day after

FreeStyler 9th December 2003 10:14

The fact that the PSU won't fit isn't the PSU's fault, but the case. The standard mounting method for ATX should have the fan pointed down. All cases I know of (chieftec, CF-matrix, Aopen, lian-li, ...) use this method. It's wierd yours doesn't.

Da_BoKa 13th December 2003 23:27

her it is

it's tested with an duron applebred 1.6 @ 2.2 GHZ with 1.85 voltage

( in bios 1.9 but my motherboard undervoltages a bit :( )

the test excisted out: downloading and uploading + 3dmark 03

piotke 14th December 2003 09:49

hmm, you clearly stressed th e PSU more then I did:

11.61 on de 12 V...

Da_BoKa 14th December 2003 10:17

but if you look to the highest readout, it's only 11.73 on het 12v

that ain't so good i believe

does anyone know if the aopen psu have rheostats to adjust the voltlines??

Vulk 14th December 2003 11:28

I think not, only the more expensive psu's.

I don't call 45 € for a 300 watt PSU cheap

jmke 14th December 2003 12:00

Antec TRUE330PEC TruePower 330W ATX Power Supply
€78

is a more expensive PSU

AOpen = cheaper. that's what Vulk meant :)

Vulk 14th December 2003 12:40

Modded superflower 400W overhere, not a bad psu and it came free with a case I bought some time ago.

Unregistered 26th January 2004 21:32

I also bought this supply, because i didn't like the old loud el-cheapo one. I really recognize the suprize when it showed to be illuminated, and so silent :)
It fits perfectly in my case, I guess the reviewers' case isn't fully complying the ATX regulation.
I think about modding some trimmers in, to adjust the voltages, but i didn't find any guides for it yet, anyone has an idea??

Unregistered 16th May 2004 13:04

Test it with a multimeter?

StaRflaM 16th May 2004 13:35

my 350watt is not that silent :)

sometimes it is but when i was stressing it when i had 5HD's it became verry noisy :)

well let's hope i win the acryan contest, could use it :P

Test with a multimeter - after and before the board.

Some boards are undervolted despite good voltage from PSU. But, it normally applies to 12 volt rail only.

Sidney 28th May 2004 21:08

P4P800 Deluxe where the Hot Potato sits using FSP 350 Watts;
12 Volt rail MBM5 during load down to 11.25 Volt no crash; Tester reports 11.73 volt. So, this poor low performance PSU ain't as bad.

IC7 with 2.8C; 400 Watts Macron; MBM is telling me a good 12 volt rail at 11.85 under load; tester reports 11.55 Volt.

Sometimes voltage reading from mother board is no difference than temp reading; "they" got you by the balls.

I wonder why do we measure if the measurement/equipment used is inconsistent.

I used a three pin to 4-pin molex; connected the 3-pin to the board and probed the 4-pin Molex.

These aopen's are pretty good for what they cost, we use them standard in cases that come without PSU and never had a single problem with them.

Sidney 7th June 2004 07:24

PSU pricings have been dropping in recent years. Anyone remember the cost of a 180 Watts?

I was looking at one in the basement; came from my 486 33mhz (turbo button) I built in 1992. The price tag (tap) read $75.

They simply cannot afford any resistors, capacitors, diodes with the tight tolorance at this price range. The difference between +/-10%; +/-5 and +/-3% is big in costs.

Anyway, I have Aopen (FSP) and HEC both have been producing PSU longer than some recent brands. Unfortunately, both are at the low end of the specs. If you don't OC, they provide decent performance. Don't forget the label says +/-5% (12.6 - 11.4 volt is within specs).

Da_BoKa 7th June 2004 18:04

i have an aopen 350 watt and it doesn't undervolt, above you see a screenshot from that psu with an nf7-s rev1.1 and it whas the mobo who undervolted
now with an rev2 they are stable

it's an quite ( as in unhearable ) and descent

CmdrGod 9th June 2004 17:16

nice review
great work on that psu

Da_BoKa 22nd June 2004 14:17

guess what, today io wanted to know if my aopen 350 watt has pots inside

and yes it has 3 litte pots inside

now i only need to figure wich pot is for the 3.3v line

i always liked this psu :super:

Da_BoKa 22nd June 2004 22:26

i found the pot and i could raise the 3.3v line up to 4 v

but a sad thing happend, when i was searching for the right pot, a pot broke of, and so the psu 12v is overvolted ( 13+v ) i tried to boot it up with my sys but it fails, it shuts itself off,

i'm hoping it's the psu

jmke 22nd June 2004 22:28

:( that doesn't look good, let's hope its the PSU
