AMD Duron Applebred vs. Athlon XP Thoroughbred

Piotke pits the Athlon XP TbredB against the newly introduced Duron Applebred

Quote:

Recently AMD introduced its new durons. I bought one of them, the 1.6 ghz version. The most interesting part of this cpu is its core voltage, only 1.5 V.
This cpu begged to be compared with an Athlon XP, dlt3c (known for reaching speeds up to 2700Mhz!). Is the new Duron an equally good overclocker ? Maybe even better ? Find out in this review.

very well written review !
enjoyed reading it.

nice review,
I expected the difference to be a little bit bigger, turns out the cache isn't that important voor AMD

but why didn't you mod the duron applebred so the full cache was restored? Like they did @ Overclockers.com

jmke 7th October 2003 23:13

It wasn't his Applebred + CPU was gone before the mod was released :)

J have K7S5A motherboard from ECS and my duron 1600 works with no vmod on 166 FSB which gives 2000MHz. On this setting every benchmark works well and there are no lockups.
Sandra 2004 results: multimedia: integer 18380 (XP2600+ 19080), float: 21064 (XP2600+19334)

that a pretty good bang-4-the-buck in my humble opinion :)

DUR0N 8th October 2003 20:54

like the other AMD CPU's

piotke 10th October 2003 06:50

I have a choice to make, to keep my Atlon T-bird 1.33 Ghz (OC at 1.5) or to try the new duron 1.4 GHz Applebred... What cpu will have the best performance?

Da_BoKa 19th October 2003 14:23

the new duron and oc it

but make sure that your motherboard can handle that cpu

greetz

piotke 19th October 2003 17:53

the duron will defenately do 2 Ghz, maybe more, on low voltage....

But ike da boka said, make sure you mobo can handle 0.13” cpu's?

Bagoz 19th October 2003 23:48

Tanks for the info!

I just had a new Asus A7N8X-X, Im shure it work with the new duron! Will try to find one and post my results

Bagoz 21st October 2003 20:52

:^D Wow!!!

The 1.4 version run perfectly stable at 2 gig (12x166) with vcore set at 1,575v. I currently run it at 11.5x166, vcore at 1.550, thats what i call "conservative" setting :super:

It's the most cost effective Cpu that ever existed... Shame on you Celeron's of this world!!

piotke 21st October 2003 21:31

eum, celerons also overclock well :)

nicu duron you got there, cab you write down the core stepping ?

Bagoz 21st October 2003 21:48

Core stepping?

DHD1400LV1C

jmke 21st October 2003 22:09

Bagoz 23rd October 2003 00:06

Sorry for the delay, I am curently out of town, will get back and post the correct core stepping when i get back, in 2 days
