Sure it's dead?

I have such problems with my DFI all the time. Today my rig suddenly shut down ... it took my a few hours to find out that the only thing I had to do was dismantle the system and wait a few minutes.

Changed PSU, doesn't short circuit as long as that damn 4-pin connector isn't plugged in .

No, only switched from Celeron cpu to Conroe cpu .

Air cooled, no other mods.

Still have my ASUS P5N-32E SLI PLUS to play, but I'll be very carefull....
And a P5PL-2 and a NLV (merom) motherboard, but they won't be powerfull.

myself

Apparently I was able to bend some pins from the cpu socket holder.

Straightened them and the old trusty Celeron 331 came back to life .

Hehe; I got it from real life.

Well; odd things still going on. The Syncmax stick that was not able to boot suddenly acts again, strange thing is that dual channel sometimes does not boot. Separate sticks booting is no problem, tomorrow I will do a Memtest.
